Bellwork, Unit 1 #6 Define latitude Define longitude

Quick Write A local reporter is coming to interview you about your class trip around the world!! He wants to know about your route, your modes of transportation and if there is anything you would change after hearing your classmates present their trips. Prepare for your interview by writing at least 4 complete sentences about your trip!

Planet Earth

Latitude The lines that run across the grid -- the flat lines -- are lines of latitude. The Equator is an example of a line of latitude. The Equator is the latitude line that divides Earth into two hemispheres, the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. The Equator is the 0 point of latitude. Latitude lines North of the Equator are referred to as North latitude; latitude lines South of the Equator are referred to as South latitude.

Longitude The lines that run up and down on the grid -- the tall lines -- are lines of longitude. The lines of longitude are also called meridians. The Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England, is the longitude line that divides Earth into two hemispheres, the eastern hemisphere and the western hemisphere. The Prime Meridian is the 0 point of longitude. Longitude lines East of the Prime Meridian are referred to as East longitude; longitude lines West of the Prime Meridian are referred to as West longitude.

Tropical Humid tropical: warm with high amounts of rain- year round – can have monsoons Tropical-Savanna: warm all year; rainy and dry seasons – must have at least 20 inches of rain during the summer

Dry Desert: sunny and dry; <10 inches of rain a year Steppe: 10-20 inches of rain/year; hot summers and cooler winters with wide temp ranges during the day

Temperate Mediterranean: dry, sunny, warm summers; mild wetter winters; ave rain 15-20 inches Humid subtropical: humid with hot summers and mild winters; rain year round; hurricanes and typhoons possible Marine West Coast: cloudy, mild summers and cool rainy winters; strong ocean influence Humid Continental: 4 distinct seasons

Polar Subarctic: extreme temp; long, cold winters and short, warm summers; little precipitation Tundra: Cold all year; very long, cold winters; short, warm summers; permafrost Ice Cap: Freezing cold; snow and ice; little precipitation

Highland Highland: Wide range of temperatures and precipitation amounts

Gallery Walk Around the room are the different climates. I will assign you a number to begin, once I give the cue, you will find that number on the wall, open the paper and write one word to describe the climate. You will have two minutes as a group (I will assign groups) to define the climate. After your two minutes are up, move to the next number (in order). When your group gets to the last one, stay there.

Bellwork Unit 1, #9 What impact does water have on land? Name the major climates? What is the difference between weather and climate?
