Team Approach Counselor and/or student identify need for online coursework. Counselor and/or student determine online platform and application forms are completed. O-Lab teacher receives applications, enrolls student, and processes payment (TxVSN). O-Lab teacher facilitates course and proctors final exam. Counselor monitors progress. O-Lab teacher processes final grade report and sends it to registrar. Susan

FBISD’s Online Learners Onsite Learners Remote Learners Combination Allegra In discussing online learning in FBISD, we can characterize the online learning opportunities into three categories. The reality however is that our students can engage in one, two, or all three of these online learning opportunities. Because of this, it’s critical that the team approach that Susan just discussed be implemented. In essence, we are individualizing and providing students with the best instructional environment for them, in an effort to meet the needs of ALL students. All three of the online learning opportunities shown here have the potential to offer effective learning for FBISD students. Our onsite learners are those students that are scheduled for O Lab during the school day and physically sit in the O Lab, completing coursework, with the support of their O Lab Teacher. Our remote learners are those students that are enrolled in online courses that they complete during those times that are best for them. For the student that is a remote learner, self-motivation and self-discipline, while needed for any online learning opportunity, are especially critical. We also have students that engage in both onsite and remote learning opportunities. As we come together collaboratively, the question is not “which online instructional environment is best”, it is, “which one works best for this particular student, at this particular time in their educational path”. Considerations include the student’s schedule, their internet access, their organizational skills, etc. We are called upon to look at each student individually to determine which method is best for them and how we can together support them. This springboards us into our next topic, the profiles of our online learners.  FBISD’s Online Learners

Original Credit Learning Program Designed to allow students an opportunity to earn high school credits for courses they have not yet taken. Delivers educational services in a flexible, time-efficient manner Goal: To help students succeed academically and ultimately graduate.  Allegra

The Profile of an Original Credit Student The student should be: Self-motivated & self-disciplined Aware that online learning is time consuming Able to meet defined deadlines Comfortable communicating through writing Able to think through ideas before responding Able to work from written directions Willing to log on to their course every day Willing to commit time & energy Willing to speak up if a problem occurs The student should have: Access to a computer, laptop, or tablet & WiFi/internet access A history of completing assignments on time and of setting goals and taking responsibility Allegra

The Profile of a Remote Learner The student should be: Self-motivated & self-disciplined without constant monitoring Aware that online learning is time consuming and will require work from home or other non-campus locations Able to meet defined deadlines without a teacher constantly reminding them Comfortable communicating through writing Able to think through ideas before responding Able to work from written directions Willing to commit time & energy willingly and without prompting Willing to speak up if a problem occurs Able to keep up with course obligations The student should have: Access to a computer, laptop, or tablet & WiFi/internet access A history of completing assignments on time and of setting goals and taking responsibility Allegra While the original credit learner and the remote learner have many similar items in their profiles, it’s important to note that the remote learner must be exceptionally disciple because they will most often be working in a non-campus environment. The remote learner is able to work anytime, anyplace, and at their own pace (within reason), however, with this instructional freedom comes great responsibility. The remote learner often does not have the “safety net” of the O Lab teacher on a consistent basis and must be very self-motivated.

The Credit Recovery Program Designed to allow students an opportunity to earn high school credit for courses not successfully completed in the past.  Delivers educational services in a flexible, time-efficient manner Goal: To help students succeed academically and ultimately graduate.  Allegra The Credit Recovery Program serves to do exactly what the name implies, it provides an opportunity for students to recover those credits that they need to put them back on track to graduate. Many times credit recovery will serve to do what is shown in the picture here, rescue the student. The program is flexible and designed to make the best use of time, with the ultimate goal being graduation for the student. However, in order to fully maximize the potential of this program, it’s important that you know these learners. And, while you undoubtedly know your students, let’s talk specifically about what the characteristics of a credit recovery student.

Common Characteristics of a Credit Recovery Online Student Often have a history of course failure Prone to attitude and behavior patterns or barriers that were a factor in course failure Find completing coursework challenging Often discouraged and at-risk for dropping out of school Often have issues with absenteeism Allegra We know that our students that are in need of the credit recovery program are usually in need of credit recovery due to some characteristics that would seem to work against their success in an online program. The reality is often, the very nature of the student in need of credit recovery conflict with the characteristics needed to propel them to success. This is why the team approach is so very critical. The credit recovery student definitely needs a “village” to support them as they work to get to the graduation mark. But, there are some things that you can do to support these students and all online learners.

The Profile of a Credit Recovery Online Student Because the credit recovery student may not have all of the recommended characteristics, it’s important to work with them to educate them about the characteristics of a successful online learner and build these skills. Self-directed learning skills Good time management skills Able to complete assignments on time Committed Persistence Able to see the big-picture Willing to reach out to the teacher immediately when having problems Able to learn without the level of interactions found in a traditional classroom Allegra
