Grissom High School Student Council Issues and Concerns Crowded Hallways and students wandering halls during class Lunches offer less variety and are less appetizing Limited access to Post-Secondary counselors Assimilation of new students into the “Grissom family”. Technology issues (wifi connectivity, hardware compatibility, software access and integration) Grading procedures as it relates to student averages.

Grissom High School Student Council Suggestions for Improvements Improvements in school culture to increase student pride and sense of belonging. More club offerings. Positive reinforcement for positive actions. Increased security presence in halls and stairwells would help with the issues of hallways, drugs on school campus, and thefts at school. Teachers being assigned to monitor the halls would help the hallway issue. Alternative lunch choices or increased quality, ex: high quality boxed salads or offering fruit cups instead of chips

Grissom High School Student Council Offering mentoring or increased focus on those who are new to the Grissom environment in order to show the offerings that Grissom has in AP, honors and STEM classes, sports, clubs and extracurricular offerings. Less standardized testing or better coordination of tests. More standardization of test administration procedures to make the process more familiar and efficient.

Grissom High School Student Council Takeaways Our discussions with Dr. Wardynski and his Cabinet leaders provided us with the following actions: Lunch menus are currently under review with more healthy and appetizing options. Security improvements (staffing and new cameras) have already brought about improvements to security concerns. Central office will investigate placement of a full time post-secondary counselor at Grissom. Plans in place for using clubs and extracurricular activities to enhance participation and inclusiveness for all students.

New Century Technology High School SGA Presentation April 4, 2016

Changes We Have Enjoyed Our counselor is more accessible Scholarship and college information is more readily available Extended breaks

ACADEMIC CHANGES College tours More variety in classes ACT prep classes after school for all students

CHANGES IN THE CAFETERIA Supper program More choices in the cafeteria Two entrees To go packs

BLOCK SCHEDULE ADVANTAGES School is not overwhelming due to smaller amount of courses per day Longer breaks between classes Four lunch periods instead of three Science classes have additional time for labs More time for classroom instruction and students to ask questions Homework is more manageable More time to complete assignments Ask teacher for help in between class meetings

Changes We Would Like To See Include salads in the lunch options Create a district science fair or district debate tournament Establish better connections with established competitions and organizations NSBE – National Society of Black Engineers Science Olympiad Revise the grading procedures It is difficult to recover from a low test grade
