Monday 17 October 2016 We are learning: Words w/ Greek word parts #1 Webquest/prereading Literary devices Review three fiction elements Inference Vocabulary Targets: By Wednesday: I will rock my word study test! (Wednesday). I will complete the web quest and double check to see that I have followed instructions exactly (Monday and Tuesday). I will use inference as I read (daily). I will be familiar with the content vocabulary (daily).

Word study Read the instructions carefully! Some activities say do “All words.” some say “do assigned words.” Due on Wednesday; test on Wednesday. Activity #4: show you know sentences--Show you know sentences clearly portray the meaning of a word and show understanding. (NOT) They have nuclei. (YES) The illustrations of the cells showed the nuclei in the center. It is perfectly all right to use a variation of the word; this is a great way to show you know how to use a word! (Feel free to change the part of speech of the word by adding suffixes or prefixes.) (YES) The librarian indexed all the materials for our research. (index) (YES) Matt is very knowledgeable about computers. (YES) School is a great place to gain knowledge about a variety of topics. Which one? Point left or right. L. It’s mnemonic. R. I used a picture as a mnemonic device. L. The senator campaigned for re-election. R. He campaigns. L. I looked up a synonym in the thesaurus. R. The thesaurus is yellow. L. It has an index. R. Indexes containing the topics in the book are usually found in the back.

When you finish word study…Access the web site: learn as much as you can. Listen to the videos if you have earbuds. Explore it!!!!!!!!! Go to our class website: quarter one unit page Select “Chesapeake bay”— explore as much as you can!

Day 5/Citation Review Anytime you use the author’s words, use this pattern. Quotation marks. Exact words. Quotation marks. Parenthesis. Author’s last name. Page number. Parenthesis. Period. “Exact words of the author” (Last 777). “ …… .” (Cummings 33). The information in the parenthesis always matches the first information in the Works Cited entry. PROBLEM Solution A plot is built around a problem (conflict). In red kayak, we see both types of conflicts: internal (brady has to decide whether or not to do the right thing) external (nature/survival in the first few chapters; then standing up to peers and approval of society as the plot develops) As you read the next few chapters, pay attention to how the problem intensifies and tension increases. How would you feel if you were in his shoes? As you read, think about possible solutions to the problems brady faces. What would you do?

Text + Personal knowledge/experience = more than the text tells Inference means to know more than the author tells you. It involves what you know about life already…what you bring to the things you read. Listen to the following clues and tell what you infer—what you can guess about the situation based on what you know by putting pieces together. (pages 70/71; 77; 85; 92) Inference is what you understand when you put together text clues and your own experiences and knowledge. It is putting everything together to make meaning from what you read. Text + Personal knowledge/experience = more than the text tells

Chapters 11 and 12 Answer the following prompt and tell what you infer—what you can guess about the situation based on what you know by putting pieces together. Cite a passage from the book and add two to three complete thoughts as explanation. Brady takes a dinner to the diangelos and does several jobs at their house. Why is brady so interested in the diangelos right now? What do you infer might be the reasons behind his actions? Copy a passage that influenced your thinking.

As you read, think about which problem you will think more deeply about. (use anything from the entire book)

(Remember, the theme is the big idea.) write an informative paragraph. Explain why that word fits these chapters. Use a passage from the novel to support your explanation. Chapters13, 14, 15 This is an informative paragraph. It should start with a claim supported by commentary, explanations, examples, and evidence. Write one half page or more. For example, your big idea could be courage and your claim might be Confronting a Friend Takes courage. (use mine if you can’t think of your own.) When you finish, read to the bell.

Tense moments signal a problem situation Tense moments signal a problem situation. The author develops the conflict through the problem situations. In your spiral…list five situations we have read about so far that show a problem situation. (think: when does something happen that feels tense?) Choose one of those situations. Find that part in your book. From that page, select a passage that shows the tension you noticed. When you finish your problem/solution paper (ticket out) and read to the bell. (how did you do on our targets this week?)

cause/effect relationships Cause and effect is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the other. This is often a combination of action and reaction. We often see this in literature in connection to conflict development. Examples of Cause and Effect  We received seven inches of rain in four hours. - The underpass was flooded. I seldom brush my teeth. - I have 5 cavities. Smoking cigarettes - Lung cancer Many buffalo were killed. - Buffalo almost became extinct. The streets were snow-packed and icy. - Cars needed more time to stop. He broke his arm. - The doctor put it in a cast. The boss was busy. - Her secretary took a message. A basketball player was traveling. - The referee called a penalty. I flipped the light switch up. - The light came on. An oil spill - Many deaths to wildlife Sedentary lifestyle - Childhood obesity

Why should there be consequences for choices Why should there be consequences for choices? (especially bad ones) Explain your thoughts. Use a passage from the novel to support your explanation. Focus on Chapters 16, 17, 18 This is an informative paragraph. It should start with a claim supported by commentary, explanations, examples, and evidence. Write one half page or more. Topic sentence Example: (use one of mine if you can’t think of your own.) Bad choices should have consequences. All choices have consequences. We can control our choices but we cannot always choose the consequences of those choices. In your paragraph, you may want to use a cause/result example. There are many real life examples on the worksheet you just completed or use one from your own life! Use an example (passage in mla format) from the text to support your topic sentence.

Characterization: the way an author develops a character—how information about a character is revealed. Direct Characterization The author tells us something directly about the character: personality, appearance, relationships, etc. Examples: Digger has a Buzz Cut. J.T. is a computer Geek. Indirect characterization The author doesn’t directly state the character’s trait. Readers use inference to discover the character traits. Examples: Brady and his dad worked on projects together whenever they could. Digger just wouldn’t let it go and kept insulting Mr. diangelo.

Even though Brady now feels some peace, he has agonized over his decision. We can infer that he has struggled to do the right thing. Copy two or more passages from the novel that show that struggle and the difficulty this decision has caused. (explanation/paragraph optional this time.) Chapters 19 to 23 Use correct MLA format!!!! Like this: “Follow this pattern.” (Cummings #).

Wrap-up response Mistakes. Regret. Consequences. Making things right. Talk about each of the boys’ decisions. Why did they do what they did in the end? Why is saying “sorry” not always enough? What have you enjoyed about this book? What did the author do well? How did you do on your targets this quarter? Explain, using at least two examples. (show off your skills in your project and writing) Correct capitalization Complete thoughts End punctuation Choosing correct homophone (spelling) Knowing basic Greek roots Writing a strong topic sentence Supporting a claim with explanations/ examples Using a text reference (author and title) Citing text with correct MLA format Flag word awareness/ increasing vocabulary Elements of fiction (plot, conflict, setting, character, theme) Close reading—connecting to text Recognizing sentence parts (being/action verbs, subjects, predicates) Option one—use this if not much time.

Project planning Fill out all 6 squares. This is a work completion grade! When you finish, please bring your planning sheet back to my desk to have your assignment checked off. Begin working on the project. You will have class time on Monday and Tuesday to work on the project. Due Friday, 13 November 2015
