Technology Applications Mr. Moses Computer Hardware Technology Applications Mr. Moses

Objective To understand how the parts of a computer work together to help us perform tasks every day

Objective Describe the three basic tasks a computer system performs Define the commonly used computer terms processing, CPU, input device, output device, and storage device Explain the purposes of the CPU and memory List the common devices for input, output, and storage and explain their purposes

Two groups of Computer parts Hardware Computer hardware is made up of the physical parts of a computer system. Hardware consists of the parts you can actually touch, hold, and move. Software Computer software consists of the instructions, or programs, that a computer uses to tell the hardware what to do.

Three basic jobs It receives data (information) to be processed. (For example, your teacher might enter your test scores into a computer.) It processes the data in some way. (The computer might calculate your grade based on your test scores.) It outputs the results of the processing. (It might display your final grade on your teacher’s monitor.)

Computer Hardware The computer uses many different types of hardware. Here are some of the important ones: Central processing unit, or CPU Memory Input devices Output devices Storage devices

CPU CPU (central processing unit) The most important part of any computer is the Central Processing Unit (CPU). The CPU is the brain of a computer. The CPU processes data. Most computers are classified by the type of CPU they use.

Input Devices Input devices allow data to be entered (bring in data) into a computer system. The information is then ready for processing.

Input Device The keyboard is the most common input device.

Input Device A mouse is a common input device.

Input Device As computers get more sophisticated, they will be able to recognize the user's voice. The microphone will eventually replace the keyboard and mouse as the most used input device.

Input Device Low cost web cameras like the one pictured below can be used for communication with family, businesses, or friends across the Internet.

Input Device A scanner is a device that can read text or illustrations printed on paper and translate the information into a form the computer can use. A scanner works by "digitizing" an image and placing it on the computer as a file. Scanner Apps can be used on a smart phone They use the built in camera for scanning

Input Device A digital camera that does not contain any film but records the image as a digital object. The image is then downloaded into a computer or docking station.

Output Devices Output devices deliver the results of processing in a form that people can understand.

Output Devices Monitors allow the user to see the results of the computer processing their information. Monitors come in different sizes and resolutions.

Output Device Printers give the computer user a "hard copy" of the results of the computer processing the input.

Input & Output Devices Network cards, modems, and routers are dual purpose boards. They allow the user to obtain information from a network and also to transmit information to a network. These cards are classified as both input and output devices. Touch screen monitors

Storage Devices Storage devices store information so that it can be used by the computer at a later time. Examples of storage devices include hard drives, flash drives, CD-ROM drives, and DVD- ROM drives.

Storage Devices A hard drive is where data is placed or read by small magnetic head that float over the spinning platters.

Storage Devices - Examples Flash Drives External Hard Drives

Storage Devices CD (compact disc) is a thin metal disc used to digitally store data (such as music, images, or programs) for playback. Some types of CD-ROM drives let you write your own data onto compact disks (CD). Types of compact disks CD-R (Recordable) CD-RW (ReWritable)

Memory RAM ROM RAM stands for Random Access Memory. RAM is temporary storage space on chips in your computer. RAM is lost when the computer is turned off. ROM ROM stands for Read Only Memory. ROM permanently stored data. Stores the critical programs, such as the program used to boot the computer.
