SAYYiDINA Umar Ibn Al-KhatTab (Rady Allahu Anhu) Safraaz Isuf 28th Dhul Hijjah 1437 October 29th 2016

Biography Sayyidina Umar ibn Al-Khattab. His full name is Umar ibn al- Khattab ibn Nufayl, Abu-Hafs al-Qurashi al-Adawi (Rady Allahu anhu). Date of birth: 40 years before Hijra. (A.D 584) -14 years younger than the Prophet (peace be upon him). He was born in the holy city of Makkah. Al-Farooq, his title, means the one who can separate truth from falsehood. Laid to final rest on the first of Muharram, 23 A.H.

What was he known for? Celebrated for his tremendous personal courage and steadfastness in giving judgments. Accepted Islam five years before emigration to Madinah. Ibn Masud (Rady Allahu anhu) said, “we were not able to pray near the Ka’ba until Umar became Muslim”. Fought in all battles with the Prophet (peace be upon him). Was sworn fealty to as the second Khalifa of Rasulullah (peace be upon him) on the day Sayyidina Abu Bakr As-Siddique (Rady Allahu anhu) passed ahead. 40th person to become Muslim. Veteran warrior who battled in Badr and in all other battles. He caused Islam to spread to: Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, and the Arabian peninsula. 12 000 masjids were built during his Khilafat. Masjid Al-Aqsa key was granted to him specifically.

WHAT WAS HE KNOWN FOR? (CONTINUATION) He did not fear anyone except Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). After he accepted Islam, the Muslims started to pray openly. When he did Hijra no non-Muslims stopped him or followed to kill him because they feared him. Once he gave half of his properties for the cause of Islam. Patrolled the streets at night to make sure everyone was in a good state. Decorated the masjids with lamps. We send salaams (salutations) on the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sayyidina Abu Bakr (Rady Allahu anhu), and to Sayyidina Umar (Rady Allahu anhu) when we visit Masjid Nabawi in Madina. Fought against oppression. If an animal’s rights were not being met he would feel responsible.

what was he known for? (continuation) Established numerous masjids. Hadith master of 537 hadiths. Shaheed while praying dawn prayer. He passed ahead three nights later in 23/644. Was the first to start introducing Islamic calendar from the year of the Hijra. He is known for his justice. He is a great jurist. Satisfied and loved to be simple. Expanded Masjid Nabawi and installed lamps to brighten it. Introduced Taraweeh prayer in jamat. While giving a Khutbah in Madinah he communicated with the Muslim general in a distant land advising him about the battle. Some verses of the Holy Qu’ran were revealed which upheld some of his suggestions. For example, he suggested that alcohol should be prohibited and afterwards, a verse was revealed from Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) prohibiting it.

Love of The Prophet (peace be upon Him) Once some ladies were asking questions to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a loud voice. When Sayyidina Umar (Rady Allahu anhu) entered, they became quiet. So he asked them why they became silent. They were scared of him because he was strict. He said they should be more respectful to the Prophet (peace be upon him) than anyone else. He gave his daughter Sayyidatina Hafsa (Rady Allahu anha) in marriage to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to strengthen their relationship. He loved the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) more than himself as he informed the Prophet (peace be upon him). Was present in all the battles with the Prophet (peace be upon him).

About his conversion 40th person to become Muslim. The day before he turned Muslim, the Prophet (peace be upon him) made a special dua to Allah for Umar (Rady Allah anhu) to accept Islam, and his dua was accepted

About his conversion (continuation) After hearing the Surah Taha in the Holy Qu’ran, his spiritual state was transformed immediately. Before he became Muslim, he disliked the Message of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and was on his way to kill him as he did not like the religion of Islam. A man diverted him at this time when he found out and told him to deal with his sister first because she had become Muslim. He entered his sister’s house where his sister's husband was reciting Surah Taha from the Holy Qu’ran. Sayyidina Umar (Rady Allahu anhu) wanted to recite the surah after hearing it but his sister informed him he must make Wudu before he could recite it. Surah Taha was recited and the effects of it turned him into a Muslim. He went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and wanted to become Muslim. Those present were overjoyed and then came a loud cry of Allahu Akbar. He then recited the Kalima and became Muslim.

His description and behaviour Modest, humble, has a ring inscribed with “death suffices as admonition, O Umar”.  A big tall man towering over most people. With strong physique and slightly bald. Fair in complexion. A poetic and elegant speaker. Sincere and compassionate with beliefs and values. The Holy Beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Shaytan is terrified of Umar (Rady Allahu anhu) and takes another route if he sees Umar (Rady Allahu anhu) approaching”.

The love for the Prophet (peace be upon Him) The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said if there was to be another prophet to come it would have been Sayyidina Umar (Rady Allahu anhu). He asked permission from Sayyidatina Aisha (Rady Allahu anha) to be buried with his Beloved and was granted permission. Gave his daughter Sayyidatina Hafsa (Rady Allahu anha) in marriage to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Loves the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than himself and anyone else except Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) Once Mount Uhud began to shake when the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sayyidina Abu Bakr As- Siddique, Sayyidina Umar (Raday Allahu anhu) and Sayyidina Uthman (Rady Allahu anhu), were on it. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) told Mount Uhud to stop due to the high rankings that were on it. Furthermore, the Prophet informed Mount Uhud that on it were a Prophet, As-Siddique and two shaheeds.
