Looking for aberrant records Leslie Ries For Human Drivers Group

NABA Records Records for weeks 4-9 (3/22 – 5/2) NABA CONDUCTS FEW SURVEYS DURING THIS TIME PERIOD! CA has records in weeks 4 (2),8 (2),9(4)– but I need to check if these are near overwinter sites – then records fall to 1 each in weeks 11,12, & 13. Also – I’m not sure of the timing of CA events The rest of the West has single records in weeks 9&10, but these don’t seem as aberrant The South has records all the way from week 2 (early March) – but these could be overwintering residentials. The MidCentral region has early records in weeks 7 (2) and 8 (2), then nothing until week 12 The NorthCentral and EastCentral regions have no early records (earliest is week 13) NorthEast has no records until week 15

OH, IL, and Weber Records Note: Most IL surveys don’t start till later Note: Ohio often starts surveys in week 5 Note: 1 record each in weeks 7&8 Note: 1 record in week 8 Weber doesn’t start surveys until week 12 (mid-May) – and saw monarchs in 7 of 24 surveys (14 of 43 surveys in week 13). For the Ohio and Illinois surveys, the surveys in weeks 7-9 may be considered early based on my described section – but they don’t appear to be “outliers”.

MLMP Data – unusual April records There are surveys with live eggs recorded all the way back to Jan 1st – but this includes CA and southern records that may include overwintering reproductives Other early records that stood out include: Eggs observed in PA on 4/8/2006 Eggs observed in MO on 4/16/2006, 4/19/2006 Eggs observed in MO on 4/23/2007 Eggs observed in MO on 4/30/2008 (all four same location) Eggs observed in GA on 4/19/2003 Eggs observed in GA on 4/26/2003 (observer “Altizer” - so prob unreliable) Eggs observed in IL on 4/19/2000 & 4/26/2000 Eggs observed in IL on 4/27/2006 (all 3 same location) Eggs observed in IN on 4/28/2006 Eggs observed in IN on 4/30/2008 (both IN, same city but diff observers) Firsts observed in NC on 4/26/2006 There are several early May records that could also be considered “early”, but a lot, so at this point, I haven’t looked at these

Journey North Focus on April or earlier records I think this will take a more seasoned person than me – but here are some records that stood out: MD 3/25 (then none till 2nd half of April, but then throughout) VA 3/29 (then commonly after 4/8) CT 4/22 (other early 4/28, 4/29, 5/1,5/1, etc…) WV mid-April on… NY a smattering in mid-to-late April, then throughout May ON a smattering in late April, then throughout May PA had many sightings throughout 2nd half of April DC 4/25 DE 4/26 (but other early 4/28,4/30, etc…) NJ throughout April MA 4/26, then not until May NH 4/19, 4/29, 5/8, then all past May 23 ME, VT, NB has several throughout May GA, SC each has 2 in mid February, then throughout March… NC throughout March; TN throughout mid-March on IA in late April (23-30) IL, KS, KY, MO had many sightings throughout April IN, MI, OH had sightings throughout 2nd half of April WI 4/20, 4/24, then throughout May MN 3/22 – then 4/29, 5/3, then throughout May SD 4/22, 4/30, then mid-May on
