Factors Behind Cebu’s Success in IT/BPM 1 Cebu Investment Promotions Center 2 Cebu’s Vision to become one of the IT Hubs 3 Availability of Talent Factors behind the Success(on a per bullet)         1)  in the late 90's CIPC under Joel Mari Yu saw the decline of manufacturing due to China and Vietnam.  thus the need to explore other industries.  they went on a roadshow in Manila to invite the BPO companies to consider Cebu as a backup site.  in 2003, the first Call Center- Sykes Asia  came to Cebu and established a 17 man back up site, today Sykes is one of the big players in Cebu.by mid 2000 more BPO companies discovered Cebu and it just continues to grow to about 120,000 direct employees as of dec. 2015 2)  from a manufacturing hub in th e80's and 90's, it evolved and ventured into the BPO services 3) at the start of the BPO industry, a good number of Cebu's talents went to work in Manila but when the industry picked up a few years later in Cebu, those who went there came home and became the managers, supervisors, etc 4) CEDFIT is Cebu's biggest secret in the success of its IT/BPM industry. this secret was replicated in other Philippine Cities by mid 2000 and gave the birth of more than 40 ICT Councils who were instrumental in the success of cities like Bacolod, Iloilo, Dumaguete, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Sta Rosa, Metro Clark, and Legaspi Cities to mention some. 4 Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT “ The Pioneering ICT Council of the Philippines”

Factors Behind Cebu’s Success in IT/BPM 5 Collaborative and Supportive Ecosystem: Industry–Academe–Support Group–Gov’t Agencies–LGU’s–NGO’s 6 Supportive Cebu Chamber of Commerce partner of CEDFIT in the ICT/BPM event for more than 10 years 7 Good Infra Power/Telco/Airport due to Export Zones 5)  the unique collaboration of the entire ecosystem catalyzed the industry devt. 6) Chamber support resulted in the overseas benchmarking/study tours and the more than 10 year partnership in the ICT/BPM conferences up to this year's summit 7) Cebu's good infra on power, telcom, and airport was a big plus carryover from the export zones 8)  very active private sector that moves fast/strategically and sometimes independently from the go'vt sector 8 More Privately Led Economy

Sustaining the Growth 1 2 3 4 Target for Higher Values Services Get support starting from Basic Education 3 More Academe - Industry Collaborations Sustaining the Growth Slide: 1) aim for more IT related activities or services requiring more skills especially with the coming of automation or robots 2) talent preparation should start with Basic education- so more collaboration with DepEd, CHED and industry 3) encourage more partnerships between Academe and Industry 4) get more talents ready for the industry 5) train the teachers like EMC -AAP 6) better infra a) BRT System for a more efficient, safe and affordable mass transit system and decongest traffic in the process b) 3rd bridge between Cebu and mactan- will decongest traffic in the 2 bridges c) better international Airport will increase volume from 4M to 13M passengers/yr and more international connections 4 Career Caravan w/ Senior High Students

Sustaining the Growth 5 6 Teachers Trainings/Talent Development Better Infrastructure Cebu Bus Rapid Transit Cebu’s Third Bridge New Airport in 2018 Factors behind the Success(on a per bullet)         1)  in the late 90's CIPC under Joel Mari Yu saw the decline of manufacturing due to China and Vietnam.  thus the need to explore other industries.  they went on a roadshow in Manila to invite the BPO companies to consider Cebu as a backup site.  in 2003, the first Call Center- Sykes Asia  came to Cebu and established a 17 man back up site, today Sykes is one of the big players in Cebu.by mid 2000 more BPO companies discovered Cebu and it just continues to grow to about 120,000 direct employees as of dec. 2015 2)  from a manufacturing hub in th e80's and 90's, it evolved and ventured into the BPO services 3) at the start of the BPO industry, a good number of Cebu's talents went to work in Manila but when the industry picked up a few years later in Cebu, those who went there came hoem and became the managers, supervisors, etc 4) CEDFIT is Cebu's biggest secret in the success of its IT/BPM industry. this secret was replicated in other Philippine Cities by mid 2000 and gave the birth of more than 40 ICT Councils who were instrumental in the success of cities like Bacolod, Iloilo, Dumaguete, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Sta Rosa, Metro Clark, and Legaspi Cities to mention some.
