Why Mod Moodle? Moodle is great…but… It was not necessarily designed for a K-12 environment There are over 590 user submitted improvements and additions. Some are great!

How will we mod today? We will use XAMPP to run Moodle Servers on our laptops XAMPP is an integrated server package of Apache, mySQL, PHP and Perl (and more). CDs have PC and MAC versions. We will install and test various Mods (as well as learn where things go)

Step 1 – Copy XAMPP and Moodle Copy the MSMoodle.zip from the CD to your C Drive and extract it there. It already has Moodle installed inside it with a basic setup. It is the MoodleWindowsInstaller file but the Moodle install has already been accomplished. If you are a MAC user you will need to copy the Moodle4MAC… file. And you will have to install Moodle in a minute!

Step 2 – Start Moodle In the Moodle folder you just extracted there is an App…Start Moodle… click on it to start your Moodle Server. Click 1 on the box that opens to refresh your settings. Now go to http://127.0.0.1 to access your Moodle server. This is version 1.97 Username: etech Password: 2010

ADMINISTRATION Moodle resides in a folder on a web server. In this case it is c:\moodle\server\moodle Moodle data resides outside the web folder so only Moodle can access it. In this case it is c:\moodle\server\moodledata If you are using other than the C drive, you must edit the config.php file in the moodle directory.

STEP 3 – Finding Mods Some Moodle MODs are already downloaded for you on the CD. The folder “MOD Downloads” are downloaded directly from Moodle.org and have not been changed in any way. The folder “mods reorg” are extracted and put into neat folders and are a little easier to install. Moodle.org

STEP 4 – Installing Mods Lets look into the Moodle folder mod holds Moodle Mods to the center content area. blocks hold Moodle Mods to the side block areas lang holds Language Files for mods and blocks for the various languages.

STEP 4A – Install Feedback Extract the zipped “feedback_package” into a folder. Move the contents into the Moodle folder. Go to the Admin->Notifications screen to complete the installation.

Install Other Packages On the CD there are a variety of Moodle Packages to install. Take the next few minutes to install some of the packages (one at a time) Installing multiple packages together is a bad idea because you will not know which one failed your Moodle Install.

Moodle Indicators Moodle Outcomes are okay for input but stink for viewing Moodle.org Search for outcomes Download outcomes for 1.9 Install Example Class
