Learning Outcome: using PEER to structure a paragraph Learning Outcome: using PEER to structure a paragraph. Do now: copy this Learning Outcome into your books, with today’s date) Do next: 5 mins quietly working in your grammar workbook. Make sure you complete all exercises before you move on to the next page.

Do next: close your grammar book. In your exercise book, write down: 3 common nouns 3 proper nouns 3 compound nouns 3 collective nouns

Why do we write in paragraphs? Write down as many reasons as you can think of. PEER is the structure we use to help us write paragraphs. What do you think each letter of PEER stands for?

PEER helps us to: Organise our thoughts Communicate clearly Be more persuasive

PEER stands for: Point Explanation Example Relevance

PEER stands for: (copy this down) Point: State the main idea of your paragraph. Explanation: Explain more about your point. Example: Give an example to support your point. Relevance: Describe how this relates to your main idea.

PEER: Uniforms are a good idea. (Point) Uniforms for High School students are a good idea for many reasons. (Explanation) They make students look and feel well organised, and part of a school community. They are also cost effective. (Example) For example, at Cashmere, year 9-12 students wear a tidy maroon and white uniform. The variety of students wearing the uniform shows it suits many body shapes. It looks smart, and is clearly recognised as the Cashmere uniform. (Relevance) This shows that uniforms for High School students are practical, look good and can help to give students pride in their school.

Now have a go at writing the opposite view: Uniforms are bad! Point: State the main idea of your paragraph. Explanation: Explain more about your point. Example: Give an example to support your point. Relevance: Describe how this relates to your main idea. (2 mins to talk about your ideas then voices off!)

Random topics for paragraphs: In your book, come up with a list of ten random topics that you would like to write a paragraph about. Write a list of 3 topics you think the class would be willing to write about! (Don’t be too tricky!) I will bring around slips of paper for you to write these 3 down on.

If there is time…have a go! Write a paragraph on one of your topics.

Learning Review: Exit pass 1 thing I have learned….. (be specific!) 1 question I have about the work is…
