Incorporating Scholarly Activity Into Your Work Jenenne Geske, PhD Birgit Khandalavala, MBBS September 21, 2016

By the end of today’s Faculty Development session, participants will: Understand the current requirements for scholarly activity Be familiar with strategies to turn daily work into scholarly activity Understand the steps involved in completing many scholarly activity projects Become familiar with available departmental and campus resources

What is “Scholarly Activity?” AAFP Research is a process or activity in which knowledge is tested or developed. Scholarly activity refers to an oral or written presentation that reflects a thorough and critical collection of knowledge.

What is “Scholarly Activity?” The UNMC COM P & T Guidelines “Research can broadly be described as a process of investigation or inquiry that leads to the acquisition of new knowledge…. Epidemiology Behavioral sciences Ethics Education Information science …and so forth are all suitable areas for research activity. In the study of normal and disease processes, research may be basic (laboratory-based), translational (applied) or clinical (human studies).

What is “Scholarly Activity?” The UNMC COM P & T Guidelines Scholarly activity may also include the synthesis of new ideas, writing textbooks and monographs, and the application of fundamental knowledge to research, technology transfer, software design, website design, or other activities related to information sciences, and the development of innovative teaching methods.“

What is “Scholarly Activity?” It does not need to be an intensive, grant-funded research project!

The faculty must establish and maintain an environment of inquiry and scholarship with an active research component. Some members of the faculty should also demonstrate scholarship by one or more of the following: peer-reviewed funding publication of original research or review articles in peer reviewed journals, or chapters in textbooks publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings , or participation in national committees or educational organizations Faculty should encourage and support residents in scholarly activities

Why is it important? Contribute to medical knowledge Foster analytical thinking skills and rational decision making Improve patient care Increase visibility for UNMC Family Medicine Makes you a better teacher Add to your CV Required for maintenance of certification Impress the boss

How can your job turn into scholarly activity? Have a nagging question regarding clinic practices? Clinical Quality Improvement Project Trying a new idea for teaching medical students or residents? Educational Research Have a really unusual patient? Case report Interested in better understanding current evidence surrounding a particular topic? Systematic Review or Book Chapter Have a general question that needs to be answered? Original research

Steps / Resources

Step Resources Formulate Research Question Best to think about it in terms of PICO format Population / Patients / Primary Problem Intervention Control / Comparison Outcomes Jenenne Geske, PhD Peers

Step Resources Put together a team – share work and credit Colleagues Residents (Senior Projects) Students

Step Resources Need funding? Family Medicine Research Stipend Research Editorial Office – Grant Writing Support http://www.unmc.edu/vcr/cores/res earch-editorial/index.html UNMC Sponsored Programs

Grant Writing Support – Research Editorial Office Provides faculty with proposal development and grant & manuscript editing support Services include copy editing, formatting to agency guidelines, and analysis of the content and flow of the proposal or manuscript  Request two weeks' notice and projects are edited on a first-come, first- served basis.

Step Resources Become familiar with existing information Design your project Teresa (Teri) Hartmann –Liaison McGoogan Library of Medicine Research Team Center for Collaboration on Research Design and Analysis (CCORDA) https://www.unmc.edu/publichealt h/centers/ccorda/ Center for Reducing Health Disparities https://www.unmc.edu/publichealt h/crhd/research/index.html

CCORDA (Center for Collaboration on Research Design and Analysis) Seeks to advance clinical, basic, and translational research and public health research at UNMC and in the community and region Provide expertise in the quantitative sciences, including: Biostatistics Epidemiology Health services research Coordinate: Collaborative design Planning Conduct Analysis interpretation Of laboratory, clinical, and public health research studies.

Center for Reducing Health Disparities Goal: become a nationally recognized Center of Excellence serving the State of Nebraska by establishing and strengthening the health disparities research and program portfolios across the Center, College, Campus, and Community to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity. Convenes academic-community teams to work on health equity issues, assists faculty to perform research related to health disparities, responds to appropriate funding mechanisms, and builds capacity within the Center, College, Campus, and Community to perform health disparity research.   The Research Branch is available to provide a number of services to facilitate health disparities/health equity research including: Literature reviews Health disparity data requests Consultation on study design of projects targeting underserved communities Spanish translation services for IRB approved research related documents Promotion and enrollment into research studies

What about the IRB??? Something is generally not considered scholarly activity until it is disseminated Curriculum modifications and educational techniques do not, as such, need IRB approval… However, when you collect data from people and disseminate it, IRB review is required Most of this type of scholarly activity can be submitted using an exempt research application – shortest and easiest IRB to complete; fastest approval time Reporting on educational processes doesn’t usually require IRB approval Outcome evaluation activities will probably require IRB approval (if you’re collecting any kind of data from people)

Step Resources Collect Data Your research team Jenenne Geske Electronic Health Record Data Access Core http://www.unmc.edu/cctr/resourc es/ehr/index.html Clinical Research Center http://www.unmc.edu/cctr/resourc es/crc/ REDCap http://www.unmc.edu/vcr/rito/redc ap/

Electronic Health Record Data Access Core Provides access to Electronic Health Care data for clinical and translational research.  This may include: Feasibility studies Cross-sectional studies Health outcomes retrospective data analysis Quality improvement projects Transfer of datasets to a registry Case finding for subject recruitment Public health research

Clinical Research Center An outpatient clinical research facility with skilled research nurses and a core laboratory which can also assists with inpatient protocols.  Serves as a resource for the teaching and training of medical students, residents, fellows and other health providers in the skills of clinical investigation through a sponsored annual clinical research course, a quarterly clinical research coordinators workshop, review of fellow- sponsored research applications and individualized instruction on research billing.

Clinical Research Center Other Testing Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MSFC) Timed Walk Test, Treadmill Testing Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT) Accelerometer Assessments 12-lead EKG Monitoring Ultrasound Laboratory Tests EKG Monitoring Portable Sphygmomanometer Clinical Services Clinical Trial Coordinators Research Assistants Clinical Space (to conduct studies) Physical Assessments  Vitals, Height, Weight, Waist to Hip Ratio Measurements NIH Stroke Scale Assessment Phlebotomy and Complex Infusion, Collections Phamacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic Measurements Insulin-glucose Clamps Stimulation Testing

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) Researchers can design their surveys and provide interested participants a link to complete the survey that will work from any Internet-connected device, including mobile devices Once a study has been completed, the system can provide a data file that is easily imported into statistical programs (such as R, SAS, SPSS, R) or spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel

Step Resources Analyze Data Jenenne Geske, PhD The Center for Collaboration on Research Design and Analysis (CCORDA)

Step Resources Disseminate Results Writing Center at the McGoogan Library of Medicine https://blog.unmc.edu/library/2016/ 09/19/services-spotlight-writing- assistance/ Research Editorial Office – Grant Writing Support http://www.unmc.edu/vcr/cores/res earch-editorial/index.html

The Writing Center Staffed via University of Nebraska Omaha Open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to work with a writing consultant on any writing project. Free service is appropriate for writing assignments, application essays, business letters, or other projects.
