Grant’s Overland Campaign Battle of Wilderness (May 5-7, 1864) Commanders Union = Grant Confederate= Lee Union #’s = 101,000 Confederate #’s= 61,000 Day 1 General G.K. Warren attacks Ewell’s men on the right flank in the morning but thick forests effect his assault

Battle of Wilderness Day 1 Day 2 Confederate commander’s AP Hill & Ewell hold off assaults led by G.K. Warren & Winfield Scott Longstreet arrives just in time to save the right flank Day 2 Longstreet leads a surprise attack on the Union left flank but is wounded by his own men (survives) Result: Inconclusive; Grant withdraws
