Aims Know how the YL Scheme works. How to access further training. Explain the Purpose and Method of Scouting. Explain the Safeguarding Policy. Know the role of a YL. Recognise the importance of POR. Demonstrate an understanding of how POR affects YL’s actions. Know the importance of safe activities and how to complete a basic risk assessment.

The role of a yl It is a unique role with in scouting. You can develop your leadership skills, while still being able to participate in the programme. In the section you help with, you be expected to run a number of small activities, whether these be games, bits towards badge or just general activities. You will also be expected to take part in the planning meetings, and contribute towards the running of a night as well as running your own part or all of a night.

Purpose and method of scouting The Purpose of Scouting is to help develop the young people, so they can achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials. In the roles as individuals, responsible citizens and members of local, national and international communities The main Seven areas to use to help plan your balanced programme are the: Community Fitness Creative Global Outdoor/Adventure Belief Skills

Purpose and method of scouting The Method that Scouting uses is Young People working in partnership with Adults: Enjoying what they are doing; Learning by doing; Participating in varied and progressive activities; Making choices for themselves; Taking responsibility for their own actions; Working in groups; Taking increasing responsibility for others; Taking part in activities outdoors; Sharing in prayer and worship; Making and living out their promise.

Policy, Organisation and rules Is the rule book for The Scout Association, it defines the structure in which we operate by, and provides information about management and training. 1. Fundamentals of Scouting 2. Key Policies 3. The Scout Group 4. The Scout District 5. The Scout County 6. The Structure of HQ and TSA 7. Emergency Procedures 8. Insurance 9. Activities 10. Uniform, Badges and Emblems 11 Awards of Recognition 12 Flag and Ceremonial 13. Trusteeship, Property and Equipment 14 Other Matters 15. Complaints, Suspensions and Dismissals POR: The Appointments Process

Safeguarding – Refer to Orange card Discuss the following scenarios: 1. If a YP tells you about abuse, you must always pass this information on. 2. Having favourites can do no harm. 3. When working as a YL, its okay for you to run a game without an adult present. 4. YLs may share sleeping accommodation with Adults when space is limited or alternatives cannot be made. 5. You should not get involved in a relationship with a YP in the section you are working with. 6. YLs shouldn't’t have any physical contact with young people. 7. YP always report incidents of abuse. 8. YP are likely to exaggerate incidents of abuse.

Safeguarding – Refer to Orange card 1. Yes – Do not promise the YP that you can keep this a secret, do not lead them on. Once finished speaking to them, write down all the information as accurate as you can remember, then sign and date it and pass on to the Section Leader. 2. Must remain impartial – At times we all feel that we are glad when a YP moves onto another section, but you must now show these feelings towards them, and treat all of them as equally and fairly as you can. 3. No – The adult in charge has full responsibility for what occurs during the section night, this means that an adult must supervise what you are doing as you are still a Young Person. 4. No – YLs are under 18, and Adults are over 18, therefore you must not share accommodation with an adult at any times, a screen to separate sleeping accommodation may be sufficient at times if needed.

Safeguarding – Refer to Orange card 5. Under no circumstances get into a relationship with a YP in the section you are working with, this violate the Orange Card. 6. Due to the age gap and potential physical difference no physical contact should occur between you and a YP, to ensure no accusations can come about. 7. YP do not always report abuse, you may have to notice changes in behaviour for this occur, in cases like this you should ask subtle questions to see if there is a case for concern, if so inform the Section Leader. 8. Sometimes this is the case, only record and pass on what you know is a fact.

Risk Assessment Step 1: - Hazard Step 2:- Who might be affected? Loose Flooring Open Plug Sockets Sharp Edges Step 2:- Who might be affected? Beavers Cubs Scouts Explorers Leaders All

Risk Assessment Step 3:- Is the risk adequately controlled? Pre-Checks Is there adequate lighting Remove Obstacles Always two adult leaders present Step 4:- Is more control needed? More Leaders are needed Spare floating devices needed

Risk Assessment Step 5:- Review and Revision More food needed next time There wasn't enough leaders to cope There were too many leaders What went well? What didn't?
