6th grade children doing? What are our 6th grade children doing? The goal of this lesson is to introduce you to the design process and skills essential to design and modeling. In this lesson, you will: *Participate in an instant design challenge to create an optimal solution to a given problem and apply what you learn to understand the importance of using the design process. *Learn thumbnail, perspective, isometric, and multiview sketching as methods for communicating design ideas effectively without the use of technology.

Foot Orthosis Design Reflection Table

The dial caliper. A tool designed to measure an object to the nearest thousandth of an inch.

7th grade children doing? What are our 7th grade children doing? Design Process Overview This lesson focuses on the tools that engineers use to solve problems. Students will study the Design Process and will use it to guide their actions. In this lesson students will be introduced to the idea that there are many design processes and no single design process is better or more useful than another. They will learn that the selected design process will be built upon in the high school Pathway to Engineering courses. Students will encounter each step in more detail as they gain knowledge and experience throughout the course.

Another problem solving model.

Utilize a decision matrix to make an informed decision. Constraints Brainstormed Ideas Utilize a decision matrix to make an informed decision.

A gracious gift from the AEF. V-Carve software for drawing vectors that are cut out by the computer numeric controlled (CNC) machine. A gracious gift from the AEF.

Canvas, our 2D CAD software Canvas, our 2D CAD software. Students output their ideas to the laser cutter with this ware.

Our laser cutter cuts or engraves plastic and wood up to ¼” (6mm) in thickness.

SolidWorks software. Our 3D CAD Software. Children design problem solutions with this ware and output their ideas to 3D printers.

Our CNC machine. So cool.

Two of our eight 3D printers. These machines are utilized to output 3D drawings. More cool.

8th grade children doing? What are our 8th grade children doing? The activities in this lesson will introduce the students to several mechanisms that are used to change speed, torque, force, type of movement, and direction of movement. These mechanisms have been developed over time to address the need for changes in machine tools, robots, automobiles, airplanes, etc. Students will build different mechanisms and discover how they are used in the world today. They will be introduced to the VEX® building parts and the proper way to assemble them. Describe the purpose of pseudocode and comments within a computer program. Know how to use ratio reasoning to solve mechanical advantage problems. Design, build, wire, and program both open and closed loop systems. Use motors and sensors appropriately to solve robotic problems. Troubleshoot a malfunctioning system using a methodical approach.

Our robotic components. (Neatly stored and easily accessed)

What’s next? I would like to be trained in: Energy and the Environment Flight and Space Green Architecture
