Why did France and Britain fight in the war? To gain control of the Ohio River Valley To expand their empires To extend the hostilities that already existed between these two nations in Europe

2. Why did the British Colonies Fight? The Ohio Valley A desire to expand westward to the Ohio River Valley Perhaps because of loyalty to Great Britain

3. Why did Native American’s Fight? To honor military alliances (With the French) To potentially gain the benefits of supporting the victor in the war

What did Britain gain as a result of the war? Canada Virtually all of North America East of the Mississippi River

5. What did Britain lose? Lives The colonists’ respect A good deal of money

6. What did the Colonies gain as a result of the war? Access to what had been French territories

7. What did the Colonies lose? Lives Profits from trade (due to increased taxation to pay off Britain’s war debt) Some rights commonly held by British citizens

9. What did the war cost Native Americans? Lives The aid and friendship of the French French protection from the British

George Washington Led Virginia in the first battle of the French and Indian War (The French and Native Americans easily defeated the American troops) He distinguished himself as a colonel of the Virginia Regiment in further battles

William Pitt British Leader in the French and Indian War. Under his leadership the British were able to reverse their previous loses and began winning battles

Pontiac Native American leader (an Ottowan Chief) who fought the British after the war ended by leading and attack on British forts The Native Americans did not like that British settlers were moving west onto their lands

George Grenville Financial expert who was appointed Prime Minister of Britain in 1763 He wanted to raise money from the colonies to help pay off the war debt. His first act was to reduce smuggling or illegal trading-which hurt Britain in lost tax money

Sugar Act A law passed by Parliament to raise money It cut the import tax on foreign made molasses (in hopes of stopping smuggling) It placed new taxes on other imports that had not been taxed before (angering the colonists) It strengthened smuggling laws

Proclamation of 1763 To prevent further fighting with Native Americans, the British government issued a proclamation forbidding colonists to settling west of an imaginary line along the Appalachian Mountains Colonists ignored the proclamation
