Welcome to Year 2 Autumn Forum Mr Harker & Mrs Oliver (Tues –Fri) Mrs Davidson

General Information Water bottles – every day Field work – Wednesday pm Library books changed Thursday. Guided reading books in every day. Swimming Thursday. Learning logs in Tuesday – neat work. Spelling test Friday’s PE: Friday pm

Learning Approach Year 2 becomes more formal working towards SAT’s. But emphasis on practical learning For example – math’s games rather than worksheets.

SAT’s This is a big year for your children. They will be tested and scores recorded as an official bench mark of their progress. This information is used to predict where children are likely to be by Year 6.

Reading

Key Changes Reading will continue with adults listening to children, develop their fluency moving away from sounding out words. In Year 2 there is greater focus on the comprehension aspect of their book (regardless of the level they are reading at). A list of suggested ideas questions can be found at the back of their learning log.

Support at Home – Vital! Use the prompt question at the back of the book when reading with your child.

Writing In Year 2, there is a huge focus on grammar and spelling, children will then apply their learning when writing different styles of texts. Grammar: Children in Year 2 need to know how to use . Verbs Tense ( past & present) ( ed and ing words) Adjectives Nouns Suffix – ment, ness, ful. less Apostrophe in contracted words e.g. don’t Commas in list

Spellings We use a spelling program called Read, Write inc: design to meet the objectives within year2. Daily lessons. Children will have a spelling book that is sent home – notes on how to use this book found on the inside cover. A spelling test takes place on a Friday, please help your child learn these key Year 2 words.

Maths Number and calculations are the areas that most weighting of the SAT’s paper is heavily focussed upon: Example of the National Curriculum for Year 2 can be found on this link http://www.primarycurriculum.me.uk/year2/mathematics

Example of Maths learning in Year 2 Can count in steps of 2,3,5,10 from any number forwards and backwards. Read and write numbers in numerals and words to at least 100. Recall addition and subtraction facts to 20 rapidly and accurately. Add and subtract mentally 2 two digit numbers. Fluently recall multiplication and division facts for x2 x5 x3 x10. Solve problems that include all four operations.

Examples from SAT’s paper Amy makes 20 cakes. She shares the cakes between 5 plates. Tick the calculation that shows how many cakes are on each plate. 20 + 5 = 25 20 − 5 = 15 20 ÷ 5 = 4 20 × 5 = 100 1/3 of 21 = ¾ of 40 = 65 + ? = 93 86 − 21 =
