Humanistic and Socio-Cultural Theories of Personality

Today We will examine Carl Jung’s type theory of personality, and take the Myer-Briggs personality inventory to better understand the theory and ourselves.

Bellringer (in journals) What do you want to end up doing later in life? Write your career goals and personal goals as clearly as you can.

Carl Jung Swiss psychiatrist 1875 – 1961 What appears to be random behavior is actually the result of differences in the way people prefer to use their mental capacities.

Type Theory Jung observed that people generally engage in mental functions that fit them best, and that becomes their personality.

Extraversion vs. Introversion Extraversion (E): Energized by external world I like getting my energy from active involvement in events and having a lot of different activities. I'm excited when I'm around people and I like to energize other people. I like moving into action and making things happen. I generally feel at home in the world. I often understand a problem better when I can talk out loud about it and hear what others have to say.

Extraversion vs. Introversion Introversion (I): Energized by internal world I like getting my energy from dealing with the ideas, pictures, memories, and reactions that are inside my head, in my inner world. I often prefer doing things alone or with one or two people I feel comfortable with. I take time to reflect so that I have a clear idea of what I'll be doing when I decide to act. Ideas are almost solid things for me. Sometimes I like the idea of something better than the real thing.

Extraversion THE PEOPLE HIGH: Seem enthusiastic and full of energy Energized by time with others LOW: Seem quiet and less involved in social world Energized by time alone

Demonstration Brainstorm a list of words you associate with extroverts Brainstorm a list of words you associate with introverts 3 volunteers needed!

Sensory vs. Intuitive As you eat your Starburst, write down everything that you notice or think about.

Sensory Intuitive Deals with the practical and real Learn through experience Innovative and creative; fantasizes about future Turn and talk: were your descriptions of the Starburst more sensory or Intuitive?

Thinking vs. Feeling Scenario: Our class of 30 has been offered an all-expenses paid trip to California, however the offer is only good for 20 people. Turn and talk: Should we turn it down if everyone can’t go? Or if we accept, how do we decide who should go and who should be left behind?

Judging vs. Perceiving Volunteer: Describe your morning today as you were preparing to come to school. Perceiving: Taking in information Judging: Organizing information and coming to conclusions
