Modern US History Nixon, Ford, & Carter

Vocab List 40 P434 CH19 -Revenue Sharing -Detente P 439 -Special Prosecutor -Executive Privilege P P443 -Stagflation -Embargo

I. Background What the Boomers went through. Some math: Birth Control + Abortions = SEX Vietnam + Civil Rights = PROTESTS Rock N’ Roll + Drugs = HIPPIES BUT not EVERYONE a hippie. Many americans not happy about: Affirmative Action (Blacks/Latinos free ride to college) High crime rate New rights for blacks Medicare/medicaid and “free ride” for the poor

II. Nixon The Republican Richard Nixon wins election after LBJ in 1968, on a campaign of bringing back Traditional Family values. Remember: # of divorces greatly increased birth rate declined after boom By 1980 40% of women are in workforce (only 20% in 1960) Nixon’s Legacy: He ended the Vietnam War Detente - relaxation of Cold War policies **Opened trade with China and Russia** Created Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sadly, Nixon is the only president to RESIGN because of the WaterGate Scandal. Basically, he spied on the Democrats during his second election run in 1972. Bugs were planted at the Watergate Hotel

Video on Watergate

III. 1970s Oil Shocks After Nixon Resigns, his VP - Gerald Ford becomes president. Gerald Ford does nothing His only notable thing he did was pardon Nixon for obstructing justice after Watergate. Two major oil shocks will rock our economy: 1973 - Because we helped Israel, the middle east suspended oil to us. Gas price quadruple (x 4) Prices for everything went up because… oil makes everything 1979 - because of the Iranian Revolution → Leads to hostage crisis

70s Oil Shocks

IV. Iran Hostage Crisis After Gerald Ford, a democrat named Jimmy Carter wins in 1976. Many do not like him. BUT He supported: Human Rights (helping the poor) Nuclear Energy Stopping Greed Israel & Egypt Peace (Camp David Accords) Sounds good right? Regardless… lots of crap went down during his presidency: Hostage Crisis: 53 Americans in US Consulate in Iran were taken hostage for 444 days. Iran hated America because we supported their King who gave us oil for our guns. Iranian revolution = they got rid of him.

Iran Hostage Crisis

V. Panama Canal Giveaway Jimmy Carter’s Legacy: Stopped funding the Dirty War in Argentina (Wikipedia it :’( ) Gave back the Panama Canal to the Panamanians Made a bunch of Nuclear power plants in the USA Fostered Peace between Egypt and Israel What truly destroyed his presidency: The Economy - The oil shocks and worldwide economic changes Competition: Japan, S Korea, Taiwan & Germany now making tons of stuff instead of spending $$$ on defense because we defend them We finally began importing more than exporting goods In 1960 40% of Americans worked in manufacturing, in 1980 it was 25%. TODAY its only 9%!!
