Open Access Scholarly Resources: what’s available & where Pat Spoor Library Research Support Team Leader University of Leeds

Drivers for open access… Not the main focus for this presentation, but drivers include Making publicly funded research available to wider audiences Increasing profile of researchers and institutions Requirements of funding bodies & REF 24/04/2018

Directory of Open Access Books Various projects have taken place to make academic books openly accessible, such as the OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in european Networks) Library, particularly relevant for social sciences and humanities. Directory of Open Access Books OAPEN Library

Finding open access material Library discovery services help surface subscription and open access content. All of the materials in previous slides listed in StarPlus. Google Scholar – in settings use library links to add your institution to include links to subscription materials.

Open Access Button Searches the web for a version of the paper that you can access immediately. If unsuccessful, it emails the author and looks for more information. https://openaccessbutton.org/

What if it isn’t OA and my institution doesn’t have a subscription? Use the interlibrary loan service offered by the Library at your institution or… Email the author ILL charges £2 at York, £5 at Leeds and no charge Sheffield

A note of caution… Be aware that published material is likely to be subject to licence terms and conditions or copyright Please don’t take the concept of open access too literally, and share or post copies or downloads of material that are subject to licence T&Cs or copyright restrictions. Publishers could take action against you and your institution.

Where to publish? http://oaspa.org/ http://thinkchecksubmit.org/ There are disreputable publishers out there who will try to exploit less experienced researchers. Plenty of good advice on the OASPA site, and from Think Check Submit, a campaign to help researchers identify trusted journals for their research. http://thinkchecksubmit.org/

Open access presses WRUP launched earlier this year, digital publisher of peer-reviewed academic journals and books, publishing across a wide range of academic disciplines. Run jointly by the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.
