Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June Planning a Regional Data and Computing Center in Germany Peter Mickel Karlsruhe Research Center – Technology and Environment

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June The Karlsruhe Research Center: -One of the largest non-commercial science and engineering research institutions in Germany -Founded in 1956; main topics are among other things nuclear physics and nuclear energy -Founded and funded by the federal government of Germany -Today: Broad science program on the areas environment, energy, microsystems and fundamental research -About scientists, engineers and other people

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June 20013

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June IT-Division of the Karlsruhe Research Center ("HIK"): -Founded in 1968, today 67 FTEs (55 staff, 12 leased people), 11 M total annual budget -Topics: To provide a best-effort IT-infrastructure for the scientists and engineers of the Research Center -Fields of work: High performance computing (vector, massive parallel, cluster) Networking Large data handling Workstation and PC division

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June Requirements for a German Regional Center LHC Tier-1 (i) To support all four LHC experiments (status 10/2000)

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June Requirements for a German Regional Center LHC Tier-1 (ii) -Karlsruhe Research Center tries to get the German Regional Center -We are planning to begin very smoothly: 2001: 1 percent of the end-volume (2006) 2002: 2 percents of the end-volume (2006) 2003: 5 percents of the end-volume (2006) -The volumes in 2001 thru 2003 are prototypes or testbeds for the full environment in 2006/2007 -We are planning to switch some of our present staff to LHC-Computing -We mean, that we need additionally about 8 FTEs (staff) and possibly some further leased people for this project -We estimate the overall costs for LHCC at about 12 M (plus staff)

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June Other Project: German Center for BaBar Computing Computing Model multi-Tier Grid based SLAC IN2P3 RAL FZK Univ. Bochum TU Dresden Univ. Rostock Tier-A Tier-B Foundation of a Research Group Grid Computing at the Karlsruhe Research Center (1 July 2001)

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June Hardware Planning for a BaBar Tier-B computing center

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe Technik und Umwelt LHCC Meeting Bologna, 15 June Presently Under Discussion A single German Regional Data and Computing Center to support: ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb BaBar CDF and D0 COMPASS Detailed requirements of German physicists for all off these eight projects expected for 18th of June
