ABOUT ASC

Mission The Aboriginal Sport Circle is a member- based, not-for-profit organization that exists to support the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities through participation in sport, physical activity, and recreation.

Specifically, ASC is responsible to: Provide a national voice for Aboriginal sport, physical activity, and recreation; Build capacity at the national, provincial and territorial levels in the design and delivery of sport, physical activity, and recreation programs that are culturally appropriate for Aboriginal people; Ensure national policies and frameworks pertaining to sport, physical activity, and recreation respond to the needs of Aboriginal people and communities; Facilitate development and training of individuals to be effective leaders for Aboriginal participants in sport, physical activity, and recreation; Recognize and promote best practices in sport, physical activity, and recreation for Aboriginal people; Oversee the development and delivery of national and international programs that enhance participation of Aboriginal people in sport, physical activity, and recreation.

Vision The Aboriginal Sport Circle strives for Healthier, more active aboriginal people in vibrant communities that are fully engaged in sport, recreation and physical activity; National systems that systemically include aboriginal people and organizations in strategies, initiatives, programs and services for improved outcomes for all Canadians; Provincial/Territorial and local capacity that serves the unique needs of Aboriginal people at the community level; Adequately resourced sport, physical activity, and recreation systems that are culturally appropriate and enable Aboriginal people to achieve success from playground to podium; Finally, that these outcomes have a positive impact on broader sector agendas including, but not limited to, economic development, health, mental health, environment and justice.

We are holistic in our approach and demonstrate our respect by caring, sharing and ensuring fairness in everything we do. Accountability We are professional and ensure accountability and transparency in our operations. We maintain credibility and the trust of our stakeholder by demonstrating honesty and integrity. Unity We are a collection of member organizations that are passionate for our cause. Our strength comes from a united voice that is inclusive of all members.

Strategic Plan 8 Areas of Focus: Organizational Sustainability (OS)- Build the necessary competencies and organizational infrastructure to support the growth of the organization Public Relations (PR)- Provide a national voice for Aboriginal sport, physical activity, and recreation Research (RE)- Conduct research to inform decisions, policy, planning and program delivery pertaining to Aboriginal participation in Sport, physical activity and recreation Policy (POL)- Ensure national and provincial policies and frameworks pertaining to sport, physical activity, and recreation respond the needs of Aboriginal people and communities. Focus areas are informed by the functions, TRCs and Sport Canada Not in priority order

Strategic Plan Delivery System Capacity Building (CB)- Build capacity at the national, provincial/territorial levels in the design and delivery of sport, physical activity, and recreation programs that are culturally appropriate for Aboriginal people. Leadership and Participant Development (LPD)- Facilitate the development and training of individuals to be effective leaders for Aboriginal participants in sport, physical activity, and recreation. Events (EVT)- Oversee and ensure the delivery of NAIG, NAHC and other national sporting events for Aboriginal participants Recognition and Promotion (REC)- Recognize and promote best practices in sport, physical activity, and recreation for Aboriginal people.

Finances ASC is compliant to deficit-free transparent budget as approved annually by the board of directors and supported by our funding partners. Sound financial practices result in achieving a clean annual audit. Governance Plan The board is accountable to members (PTASBs) of ASC and govern the organization on behalf of the members; Directors all with equal decision-making authority; Five standing governance committees comprised of Directors - others may be recruited based on skill set; Ad hoc committees of the board may be created based on need; Directors govern the organization as a whole – individual directors are not assigned to specific program areas; Operational/program responsibilities are delegated by the board to the Executive Director within limitations defined by governance policy; Program working groups can be created but report to the Executive Director directly or through staff; and, The board speaks as one voice.
