Fiction 1 Plan Resources Y3: Spring Term - Fiction: Plan 1: Imaginary Worlds

Verbs tell us that someone or something is doing, feeling or being. Boggis munches. Bunce grumbles. Bean thinks. They are dreadful. Usually verbs have the name of a person or thing or a pronoun in front of them. Revision Week 2 Monday Grammar 2

Verbs have tense. They tell us when the action happened. In the past This way of writing about the past is called simple past form. Verbs have tense. They tell us when the action happened. In the past In the present Most stories, including Fantastic Mr Fox, use past verb forms. He was too clever. He is too clever. He crept outside. He creeps outside. He sniffed carefully. He sniffs carefully. He changed direction. He changes direction.

The progressive form is continuous. It suggests that the action continued for a period of time, The farmers were waiting all night to catch Mr Fox. or continued at the time something else happened. The farmers were arguing when Bean had an idea. This can be in the present (happening now) or in the past (happened then).

Progressive form of verbs: present and past continuous Present progressive Past progressive He hides He is hiding He was hiding She jumps She is jumping She was jumping The feast starts The feast is starting The feast was starting They wait They are waiting They were waiting

Progressive form of verbs: present and past continuous Think of a sentence which shows that the chickens did this verb for a while. Think of a sentence which shows that the chickens did this verb once. The chickens clucked. cluck The chickens were clucking. This past continuous form shows the verb continued for a while. Hint: use were Can you use past continuous form?

Progressive form of verbs: present and past continuous Think of a sentence which shows that the goose did this verb a few times. Think of a sentence which shows that the goose did this verb while Mr Fox dug. The goose hissed. hiss The goose was hissing while Mr Fox dug. Hint: use was This past continuous form shows the verb continued while something else was happening. Can you use past continuous form?

Choosing past simple and past continuous form Would this be a short action or a longer one? Boggis and Bean are digging a huge hole. Boggis and Bean dug a huge hole. Which verb form sounds longer? Boggis and Bean were digging a huge hole. Digging a hole takes a while so the past continuous form is best. How would you write this in the past form?

Choosing past simple and past continuous form Now it is your turn! Would this be a short action or a longer one? The gun fires. The gun fired. Which verb form sounds shorter? A gun fires very quickly so simple past form is best. The gun was firing. How would you write this in the past form?

Perfect form The perfect form of the past tense suggests that a past action is still affecting the present. still affecting the present. I finished the book and it is still finished. Simple past Perfect form I finished the book. I have finished the book. They dug a hole and it is still there. They dug a hole. They have dug a hole. He lost his tail. He has lost his tail. His tail was lost and it is still lost. Week 2 Friday Grammar 4

Perfect Form The perfect form is created by using the present or past tense of ‘have’ with the past participle of the verb. Mr Fox has tricked the farmers. Mrs Bean has left poison for the rats. They have prepared a feast.

Perfect form Change these sentences into the simple past, has/have + verb and then the perfect form. He catches the geese. They empty the storehouse. We enjoy the story. Simple past Perfect form He caught the geese. He has caught the geese. They emptied the storehouse. They have emptied the storehouse. We enjoyed the story. We have enjoyed the story.

Using Perfect Form in Your Story The perfect form is for writing about things that happened in the past which still affect the present. This makes it perfect for a final sentence in a story. The rabbit family have kept their promise every day since then. The squirrel has lived happily in the tree for many years. The farmer has remembered his lesson to this day. We made a promise in the past and we are still keeping it today. How will you end your story? I began to live in the tree in the past and I am still living in it today.
