What can I work on this summer? Name You can begin working with your child to write his/her first name using capital and lowercase letters. This will also allow them to experiment with a proper pencil grip and proper letter formation. ABC’s When using letter flashcards (capital & small letters) to work on letter identification, try beginning with the letters in your child’s name, then gradually adding 2-3 more at a time. Mathematics Begin practicing number flashcards with recognition of numbers up to your child’s age, and add more when those are mastered. Reading Reading together is another way you can help prepare your child for school. Reading aloud to your child daily provides a great model of how to handle a book, the flow of a story, and even word decoding. Encourage your child to “read” books too. This may include simply turning the pages, telling what is happening in the pictures, retelling a familiar story or looking for letters and words he/she recognizes. Writing This is also a perfect time to begin allowing your child to write stories. You can model telling your child a story then drawing a picture and writing a few words to match. Give your child a blank piece of paper and encourage telling a story to you, and then putting it on the paper. At this stage writing will look very experimental, and that’s okay! I hope you will be able to use these ideas. Success happens when parents and teachers work as a team! Thank you for all you do to ensure your child has a happy, successful year of school!
