Maths Trail – Wembley Stadium By Matt Woods, Sean Moran and Becky V-W Used with permission in Issue 53 of the NCETM Primary Magazine

Wembley Stadium Facts Has a capacity of 90,000 Has pitch dimensions of 105 x 68 meters The main screens are the size of 600 domestic televisions. The arch is 133 meters tall and 315 meters long. The stadium has 2,618 toilets.

Starter Look at a map of the London Underground, from Wimbledon station, how many stops will it be to get to Wembley Park and how many changes will you need to make?

Point 1 Starting at the statue of Bobby Moore, walk around the stadium clockwise, when you get to the first gate, answer the following question. If 80 people walked through the gate every minute, how many people will be in the stadium after 24 minutes?

Point 2 – The Arch If the arch is 133 meters above the ground and the roof is 52 meters above the ground, how many more meters is the arch above the roof?

Point 3 – The toilets If each toilet can hold 15 people inside, how many people will fit into 1250 toilets?

Point 4 - Capacity If Arsenal are playing Chelsea in the FA Cup Final and Arsenal have 42,741 fans representing them and Chelsea have 35,380 fans representing them, how many seats will be spare?

Point 5 – A day out If a match day programme cost £3 and a ticket cost £60 and a bottle of water cost £2.50 how much money would the stadium make if your group of friends bought 5 tickets, 3 programmes and 7 bottles of water?

Answers Starter – District line to Earls Court, Piccadilly line to Green Park and Jubilee line to Wembley Park. 24 stops. Point 1 – 1920 people Point 2 – 81 meters Point 3 – 18,750 people Point 4 – 11, 879 spare seats Point 5 – £326.50

National Curriculum Links Ma3 – Space, shape and measure. This activity can be conducted in a classroom but would be more exciting for children to get to the stadium. It can be adapted for many different years but we have targeted ours at Year 3.
