The Holy Name Chapter 5

The Divine Name 13 “But,” said Moses to God, “if I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what do I tell them?” 14 God replied to Moses: I am who I am.[a] Then he added: This is what you will tell the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.

Called By Name Gen 17: 1-5 (Abraham)  When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said: I am God the Almighty. Walk in my presence and be blameless. Between you and me I will establish my covenant, and I will multiply you exceedingly.  Abram fell face down and God said to him:  For my part, here is my covenant with you: you are to become the father of a multitude of nations.  No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a multitude of nations. Gen 32: 25-30 (Israel) Jacob was left there alone. Then a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. When the man saw that he could not prevail over him, he struck Jacob’s hip at its socket, so that Jacob’s socket was dislocated as he wrestled with him. The man then said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go until you bless me.”  “What is your name?” the man asked. He answered, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be named Jacob, but Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.” 1 Sam 3: 4-10 (Samuel)  The Lord called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” 5 He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.” “I did not call you,” Eli answered. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the Lord called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “You called me.” But he answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.” Samuel did not yet recognize the Lord, since the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.  The Lord called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the youth.  So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the Lord came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Baptism At our Baptism, God calls us by with the words, ________________, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are called by name and God has a loving plan for each of us. Reflection—what does it mean to know that God calls you by name?

The Divine Praises Blessed be God. Blessed be his Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man. Blessed be the Name of Jesus. Blessed be his Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be his Most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her Glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.

The Name of Jesus Philippians 2:9-11  Therefore God also highly exalted him     and gave him the name     that is above every name,  so that at the name of Jesus     every knee should bend,     in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and every tongue should confess     that Jesus Christ is Lord,     to the glory of God the Father.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Reverence—respect and honor given to someone or something… we reverence the altar, we act with reverence in church, we speak reverently when using God’s name or the names of the saints. We remember that when we use God’s name we invoke his presence. Blasphemy—verbal abuse or scorn of God’s name or the names of the saints or holy things Oath—calling a higher authority to witness to a truth… false oaths are sinful. Do not call upon God to witness a falsehood. Oaths have consequences. We swear by something of great value to us, so we would not jeopardize its loss by breaking the oath. We commit the crime of perjury to swear a false oath in court=sent to prison. Words have great value and we must always speak the truth responsibly. (Swearing is sinful= angry words—5th Commandment; impure words—6th commandment)

PROMISES and VOWS The Vow of Matrimony Fidelity to one’s spouse until death…giving up marrying anyone else The Vow of Religious Life Chastity—giving up marriage for the sake of God’s Kingdom Poverty—giving up the right to use property without permission and without necessity in order to be more like Jesus Obedience—giving up ones’ own will to be more like Jesus Promises are made to people. Vows are made to God. Vows are binding, but they bring us freedom—the freedom to love and follow God all the days of our lives.

The church structure and objects used for Mass, as well as blessed objects, are holy and must be treated reverently. Tabernacle—where Jesus in the Eucharist is reserved Altar—where the Sacrifice of the Mass occurs Ambo—where the word of God is proclaimed Presider’s chair--where the priest sits during the Mass Crucifix—reminder of Christ’s saving sacrifice Congregation—the place of the lay faithful Choir—the place for musicians Baptismal font—where we become members of the Church Shrines—places of prayer for particular saints and devotions
