5th Grade Feature February 5, 2016 In school, we have been; At home you can; Reading Using questioning to activate background knowledge and build understanding during and after reading Summarizing key ideas in a nonfiction text Next Week Use text features to build understanding and deepen comprehension Identify the main idea and supporting details in a selected text Math Analyzing word problems and choosing a method to find decimal products Completing a summative assessment on multiplying decimals Participating in a math workshop Completing a pre-assessment to determine mastered skills of dividing decimals Exploring division patterns with decimals Writing Editing our memoirs for spelling and grammar Designing a cover page for our writing Social Studies Learning about the Stamp Act and creating anti-tax posters Analyzing the significance of the Boston Massacre Reading and Writing: -Have a conversation with your child about a book they have listened to in class or are currently reading. Ask them to summarize the key ideas in the text. (who?/what?/where?/when?/why?/how?) -Ask your child to share their rough draft of their memoir with you on google docs. Math: -Study multiplication and division facts. -Have your child practice double digit decimal multiplication. Ask them to explain the problem solving process and how they move the decimal. ($3.45 x 23) Social Studies: -Engage in a dialogue with your child using these questions, “Are taxes important? Do you think taxation without representation is fair?” -Ask your child to explain what spin doctoring is and why it caused and uproar in the colonies.
