Scottish Survey of Adult Literacies (2009) around one quarter of the Scottish population (26.7%) may face occasional challenges and constrained opportunities due to their literacies difficulties, but will generally cope with their day-to-day lives; within this quarter of the population, 3.6% (one person in 28) face serious challenges in their literacies practices. Adult Literacy and Numeracy in Scotland (ALNIS) 2001 The ability to read, write and use numeracy, to handle information, to express ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems, as family members, workers, citizens and lifelong learners. The Adult Literacies Curriculum Framework wheel This shows a range of literacies skills individual learners may want to develop.

Residents’ Association A group of residents meeting at the local community centre want to make improvements to their local area. A local councillor comes to the centre to listen to the residents’ ideas for a new play area and their complaints about antisocial behaviour. He suggests setting up a residents’ committee. Ashley volunteers to write up the first meeting’s minutes. What does she need to know before she starts?
