Prevalence of mental ill-health in a whole country population of people with learning disabilities Laura Anne Hughes-McCormack, Ewelina Rydzewska, Angela Henderson, Sally-Ann Cooper Institute of Health and Wellbeing, University of Glasgow Laura.Hughes-McCormack@glasgow.ac.uk Introduction Mental-ill health is unevenly distributed across the population, and appears to be more prevalent in people with learning disabilities Other studies reporting prevalence rates have been limited by non-representative samples and/or small study samples Methods We analysed Scotland's Census 2011 data and generated descriptive statistics about people with and without learning disabilities. Sample In total, 5,295,403 people lived in Scotland in 2011 26,349 (0.5%) of them have learning disabilities That’s 15,149 (57.5%) males and 11,200 (42.5%) females 5,234 (19.9%) children and 21,115 (80.1%) adults Project Aims This study investigated: The prevalence of mental ill-health in people with learning disabilities compared with the general population Prevalence of mental ill-health in the populations with and without learning disabilities: N (%) All ages 0-15 yrs 16-24 yrs 25-34 yrs 35-44 yrs 45-54 yrs 55-64 yrs 65+ yrs People with LD 5,706 (21.7%) 668 (12.8%) 773 (18.6%) 722 (20.8%) 927 (24.0%) 1,143 (26.6%) 805 (28.1%) 668 (27.2%) People without LD 227,237 (4.3%) 2,653 (0.3%) 14,777 (2.4%) 32,882 (4.9%) 49,637 (6.8%) 52,107(6.7%) 34,788 (5.2%) 40,393 (4.5%) Results Mental health in females Mental health in males Conclusions People with learning disabilities are: more likely to have mental ill-health, especially males More information: www.sldo.ac.uk This poster presents findings from Scotland’s Census 2011.
