Families

Family Children were expected to behave the same as their parents. Boys were allowed to explore the outdoors, hunt and fish. Girls were expected to tend to the house, helping their mothers cook, wash, clean, and sew.

Many children learned to read, but most households owned only the Bible and other religious books. There were a few books written for children, but these often warned against bad behavior and described the punishment that children would suffer for sinful acts: Like getting put in stocks.

Religion

The religion of the people at that time was called Puritan. This religion is very strict and is hard. The Christian gatherings back then were illegal because everybody was “supposed” to be Puritan. Citizens were said to have religious freedom, but they really had none. This means the people couldn’t do any other type of worship.

To the Puritans, the Devil was as real as God. The people thought that witches were possessed by the devil.

Trials

Factoids Around 24 people died. 19 were hanged. One 80 year old man was crushed for not testifying. Several died in jail. People weren't burned in America, only in England

Questions Where were people burned? How old was the man who was crushed? Around how many people died?

Answers England 80 24

History

HISTORY In 1692 Salem was divided into two different parts. Salem Town and Salem Village. Salem Village was part of Salem Town. Salem was under British control and they were waiting for a new governor. By the time he got there the jails were full of accused people. There were 200 people accused and 20 people executed.

History Salem had a strained economy because King William’s war caused refugees to move into Salem Village.

History 1591 – King James authorized the torture of suspected witches in Scotland. 1606 – Shakespeare wrote a play about the witch trials called ‘Macbeth’. 1640 – Witch–hunting decreased in France 1682 – England executed its last witch.
