George Washington -No stranger to liquor -campaign team handed out drinks to voters during his 1758 campaign for a seat in the House of Burgesses -28 gallons of rum, 50 gallons of rum punch, 34 of wine, 46 of beer, and 2 of cider -entire county had 391 votes

George Washington (continued) -had his own distillery

Shays’ Rebellion Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation

Pennsylvania - 1791 -over 5,000 pot stills in western PA -a pack horse could carry four bushels of grain, but could carry twenty four bushels distilled into whiskey -became a rural currency (even pay for clergymen)
