Interpretation C – An extract from KS3 BBC Bitesize made in 2017. LO: To practice questions and prepare for the Elizabethan exam Interpretation B – An extract from God’s Traitors, written by the historian Jessie Childs in 2014. For many Catholics the Elizabethan ‘Golden Age’ is an alien concept. Almost two hundred of their co-religionists were executed. Others perished in prison. Torture, though formally unlawful, was used more than at any time in England’s history. One Catholic woman, destined for the gallows for organising the escape of a priest, protested that ‘the Queen herself, if she had the bowels of a woman, would have done as much if she had known the ill-treatment he underwent’. Interpretation C – An extract from KS3 BBC Bitesize made in 2017. She solved the religious tensions by following a 'middle way' which allowed Catholics and Puritans to keep their private beliefs as long as they went to the Church of England in public. However, she hunted, tortured and executed Catholic priests who came into England to undermine her power.
