Introduction to CNC Milling CNC stands for computer numerically controlled. As a milling technique, this means that a design can be specified on a computer using cad tools, and that a computer can handle the milling process. The process first became commercially available in the 1960’s following the creation of a universal language, called, APT for automatically programmed tools. The language is able to specify the movements that the drill and table must make.

Introduction to CNC Milling

Introduction to CNC Milling Component Identification Bed Functions as a base for all machine components, including the column, saddle, table, etc.

Introduction to CNC Milling Component Identification Column Installed on the bed and carries the spindle head

Introduction to CNC Milling Component Identification Saddle Installed on the slideways of the bed and traverses back and forth

Introduction to CNC Milling Component Identification Table Travels left and right on the saddle slideways

Introduction to CNC Milling Component Identification Spindle Head Composed of the spindle and spindle drive motor and moves vertically along the column slideway

Introduction to CNC Milling Component Identification ATC system Composed of tool magazine, tool change arm and changes tools
