9/30/16 – BR Do young people have power? Give an example either way. Today: What is power? Why does power matter in a democracy? How can my participation in our democracy influence/impact issues I care about? + Interactions between institutions and people impact how much power people have and how they use their power.

Vocabulary Journal #5 deliberation negotiation compromise power Autocratic laissez-faire

Young people can.. ..end wars. Student groups such as Students for a Democratic Society exerted pressure that helped bring an end to the Vietnam War. ..change school policies. Students lobbied and testified at the Chicago School Board and got the Board to require that sex education be taught in all Chicago Public Schools. ..change the way huge corporations do business Student groups across the country have gotten Taco Bell and McDonald’s closed on their campuses and in their neighborhoods to protest unfair wages they pay their farm workers (esp. tomato farmers)

Young people can.. ..fix mistakes of older people A group of Students brought attention to the 1964 murder of 3 civil rights workers. Their work led to a new trial in 2004 in which the ringleader of the murders was tried and found guilty of murder. ..What else?

Exploring Power - Discussion In your experience, are people uncomfortable talking about power? Why do you think that might be true? How was power defined in the animation? Do you think this is a good definition of power? How might you refine it? Which source of power is most interesting or important in your view? Why? Do the laws of power help you understand how power works? Why or why not? In the United States, have we done a good job of creating rules and institutions to keep individuals or groups from getting too much power? Give examples to support your answer.

Video Analysis In what ways did the animation reference the democratic values we studied? Does this change your understanding of the importance of democratic values? What does the author of the animation mean by reading power and writing power What aspects of the animation—visuals, narration, sound—helped you better understand
