Speaking

A: Among the four tours, which one would best suit people who like an active holiday and don’t need first class accommodation? B: I think Tour 1 would be. Because in Tour 1 people can experience the jungle and its diverse wildlife close

up during four-day walking tour, also can enjoy the wonderful scenery of mountain and the ancient ruins. A: What kind of people would enjoy Tour 2?

B: I think Tour 2 would suit the people who like to travel by boat and like to get close to Indian culture and learn more about their life. A: On which tours do you visit Machu Picchu (马丘比丘)? B: We could visit Machu Picchu in Tour 1 and Tour 3.

A: If you spent two weeks in an around Cuzco, which tour would be best to do last? B: Maybe Tour 2 would be best to do last. Because in Tour 2, after traveling we could return to Puno for our flight back to Lima.

Talking 1. First discuss what you like to do when you are on holiday. 2. Then discuss which tours best suit you.

Sample discussion: S1: What would you like to do during our eight days in Cuzco? There are four tours to choose from.

S2: I like seeing historical sites S2: I like seeing historical sites. I’d also like to go shopping and buy some traditional Peruvian handicrafts. S1: We must see Machu Picchu though of course. That’ll be the highlight of this holiday, So to miss it is out of the question. We’d better book for Tour 1.

S2: OK, so that’s four days so far S2: OK, so that’s four days so far. We’ve four days left and I’d like to explore around Cuzco and see the architecture and go shopping in the markets. That’s Tour 3.

S1: Yes, that sounds fun, but wouldn’t you like to experience the life of the Uros Indian people? We can always go shopping but may never get a chance like this again!

S2: You’re right, of course S2: You’re right, of course. The floating island homes sound fascinating and I’d like to find out more about their way of life. Yes, let’s do Tour 2 instead.

S1: So we’re agreed and that’s our eight days completely filled S1: So we’re agreed and that’s our eight days completely filled. First we’ll spend four days going to Machu Picchu and then four days exploring the life of the Uros Indians. Lovely!

Lead-in While traveling, people would meet many kinds of difficulties, some are unforgettable, some are embarrassed. Can you guess what would happen to the travelers?

A: Maybe, someone would forget the time to his flight. B: Maybe someone would carry some goods that are forbidden in plane. C: Maybe, someone would lost himself, what’s worse, he can’t communicate with others.

Please find the problems that each traveler has.

1. Tom traveled by air for his first time 1. Tom traveled by air for his first time. But he didn’t know that he should change his transit card. So, he was stopped by the officers in airport. The plane was 30 minutes late leaving for this.

2. In second story, Sally, who was going overseas on short holiday. She needed to take some medicine. But a custom officer stopped her and wanted to check her suitcase.

3. Paul went for a walk alone without telling others to the countryside around a small village. Unfortunately, he hurt his ankle and couldn’t get back to the village. Later, a young man saved him.

4. Donna’s problem was that she was traveling in a foreign country with T-shirt and shorts, she was surrounded by some people, she was frightened to flee. It is a very religious town and the people didn’t approve of women walking around in clothes that didn’t cover them properly.

What problem did each traveller have. Did you guess correctly What problem did each traveller have? Did you guess correctly? What should they have done to avoid the problems?

Problem Things they should have done Tom He did not obtain a transit card when he changed planes at Heathrow. He should have asked what the cards they were handing out were for.

Problem Things they should have done Sally She was stopped at the customs because she was carrying drugs without a doctor’s prescription. She should have left the pills in their original bottle which had the name of her doctor on it. To be even safer, she could have asked her doctor for a letter which explained that she had to take the pills for her health condition.

Problem Things they should have done Paul He should have told someone where he was going and when he would be back. Then when he didn’t get back, they would have known where to search for him. He had an accident in an isolated place and couldn’t walk.
