What are they? Carbs are compounds made of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), & oxygen (O) CHO

Types of Carbs

Monosaccharides (monomers) Simple sugars C:H:O are in a 1:2:1 ratio Examples: Glucose – energy for cells Fructose – makes fruit sweet Galactose – sugar in milk

Glucose, Fructose, & Galactose All are written C6H12O6 Their structures are different! Same chemical formula, but different structural formula

Disaccharides 2 monomers added together Example: Table Sugar = glucose + fructose

Polysaccharides 3 or more monomers added together

How are carbs stored? Glycogen in animals Starch in plants Cellulose
