Sequence of Development Cephalocaudal: head develops before arms and trunk Proximodistal : head, trunk, and arms develop before hands and fingers

Put these in the correct order Walks alone; says several words Describes the difference between a bird and a dog Turns head to follow moving object Names penny, nickel, dime Climbs stairs; says many more words Laces shoes Sits alone for one minute; says “da-da” Tells how a baseball and an orange or an airplane and a kite are alike Puts on shoes Tells time to a quarter hour Runs; uses simple word combos Walks while holding onto something

This is the correct order Turns head to follow an object Sits alone for one minute; says dada Walks while holding onto something Walks alone says several words Climbs stairs says many words Runs, uses simple word combination Puts on shoes Laces shoes Names penny, nickel dime Describes the difference between a bird and a dog Tells time to the quarter hour Tells how a baseball and an orange/ an airplane and a kite are alike

Now, put the age you think they occur next to the ability.

This is the correct order Turns head to follow an object 2 months Sits alone for one minute; says dada 9 months Walks while holding onto something 1 year Walks alone says several words 12 -15 months Climbs stairs says many words 18 months Runs, uses simple word combination 2 years Puts on shoes 3 years Laces shoes 4 years Names penny, nickel dime 5 years Describes the difference between a bird and a dog 6 years Tells time to the quarter hour 7 years Tells how a baseball and an orange/ an airplane and a kite are alike 8 years

Now place an M beside those abilities you believe are chiefly acquired through maturation and a T beside those that clearly involve training.

Discussion In what ways are cephalocaudal and proximodistal development indicated in the sequence described? Is there any trend or pattern with regard to the abilities that develop primarily through maturation and those for which training is also required?

Your Task Construct an intelligence test for infants and young children from birth through eight years.
