Essex LMI – The Essex Employment & Skills Board Evidence Base Tristan Smith – ECC/ESB

PARTNERS BIG AND SMALL We work closely together with key stakeholders, HE and FE providers, Training Providers and local employers, from a local to an international scale – allowing us to understand employment & skills barriers. Our members are also chosen to represent our growth sectors allowing us to gain expert insight into the industries we are trying to engage with. Through our sector action groups and programmes we have established a network of more than 150 businesses enabling us to be a leading employer voice, however we want to grow this network further. We have used this voice to; influence how European Structural Investment Funds are spent; contribute to the post-16 education and training area reviews; lobby government to give first hand experiences of failures in the skills system to meet employer needs.

Our priorities include: Increasing effective local partnerships between educators, providers and employers Improving the perception and understanding of the careers pathways within priority sectors to encourage local people to enter them Increasing opportunities for local people to gain and demonstrate the skills required by local employers Being a prominent voice for Essex employers in how funding is used for skills and employment support Informing and influencing local training provision to help shape their offer - ensuring it is employer driven Outline some of the priorities of the board as per slide.

Education & Industry STEM Programme In the last year we have year we have worked with more than 30 schools and 800 students through our Education and Industry STEM Programme, delivering 44 activities to enthuse and excite young people about careers and apprenticeships in our priority sectors through:   Industry Taster Days Masterclasses Mentoring Competitions However we cant deliver these activities without the involvement and support of local employers.

Support For Funding Bids A large number of Further Education Colleges in Essex have used the Skills Evidence Base to support successful bids to the Local Enterprise Partnership for the purchase of new equipment, to help fund the construction of new facilities and to enable curriculum development focused on local employer need. In total, local colleges have used the report as leverage to secure more than £15million of funding to enhance their facilities and equipment to deliver employer led training and apprenticeships. Examples include a new Centre for Advanced Manufacturing at Harlow College, logistics facilities at South Essex College and STEM facilities at Colchester Institute

Tutor CPD Delivered CPD to more than 20 tutors to enhance their teaching capability and gain insights into local industry.

Essex Enterprise Adviser Network Launched the Essex Enterprise Adviser Network, which has 41 Enterprise Advisers from 38 different Essex businesses working with more than 25 schools across Essex.  The EAN has led to many exciting activities taking place, including students being offered work experience from companies such as Morgan Sindall and Billericay IT Solutions, confidence building workshops, application, CV writing and mock interview days and apprenticeship opportunities. 

‘What’s Your Thing?’

‘What’s Your Thing?’ Careers info booklet We've created and distributed our Careers 'Whats Your Thing Guide' to 20,000 young people and 100 schools across Essex, Southend-On-Sea and Thurrock. This resource has been created to provide young people in Essex with careers information that will help them to understand the opportunities that exist in our priority sectors.
