The Issue – Shortage of Engineers in the Food Industry John Griffiths, Engineering Director, Princes Ltd

Agenda Introduction Engineering Demographics Princes MEOSI 2013 2017 Princes MEOSI Skill Assessments Headline Shortage Why are we doing this?

Introduction – John Griffiths John Griffiths – Engineering Director Princes Ltd (Chairman of the Engineering Trailblazer Group) Started career in 1983 – As an Apprentice Toolmaker at Marconi (GEC at the time) Progressed through vocational route to Post Graduate level qualifications Transcended Sectors - Brown/White Goods, Automotive and FMCG

Engineering Demographics – Example Princes Ltd 2013 96 Engineers looking to retire in 10 years 191 in next 20 years Current intake12 Apprentices per year It will take 16 years assuming no other natural wastage to plug the gap!!! Apprenticeships are a long term sustainable way of maintaining continuity of the required skills to run our businesses efficiently and effectively and here to stay!!!

Engineering Demographics – Example Princes Ltd 2017 Apprentices 114 Engineers looking to retire in 10 years - 3% attrition per year 223 in next 20 years - 65% of workforce Apprentice intake 4% Attrition - 3% Retiring 6% Leavers We have a gap in supply and demand Need to understand end game No's & skills

Princes MEOSI What is MEOSI? MEOSI is a process that looks at a team/shift of Engineering Technician’s and identifies the skills required to provide a balanced shift to cover the following aspects: Mechanical skills Electrical skills Operational aspects – HSE, Manufacturing, Quality, Business Processes such as SAP Site Services and Utilities skills Instrumentation/PLC/SCADA and some aspects of quality in the technology Skills assessments for all Engineering Technicians will look to benchmark individuals against their current role and identify training needs and skills gaps that will provide the business with a relevant training needs analysis by individual, shift and site.

Princes MEOSI

Skill Assessments against MEOSI Sites engaged with skill assessments – Pilot: 4 Sites 70 Technicians

Skill Assessments Selected – Typical

Skill Assessments Results – Example Strength – Mechanical Weaker – Electrical Weakest – Control Systems

Headline Shortage Professional engineers earn a higher average salary than other professionals. (£45,367 compared with £33,689). To keep pace with demand, engineering companies will need to recruit over 56,000 engineering technicians per year between 2014 and 2024 Filling the skills gap:186,000 the number of people with engineering skills needed per year to 2024. 2.65 million engineering jobs will need filling by 2024 (234,000 new positions combined with 2.42 million leaving engineering). The most positive projection of graduates entering into engineering is still 20,000 fewer than needed. Source Engineering UK

The Journey to World Class Asset Management Arms will lead both elements Maintenance task review Erith has a well documented maintenance system – time based The maintenance system has evolved as all do Current plans uploaded into Isograph work bench software Current criticality will be questioned and FMECA will be adopted Outputs – maintenance tasks scenarios can be run in the software and costs/reliability evaluated/optimised Minimising costs Meeting Safety and Environmental Goals Meeting operational goals Results uploaded directly into SAP RCM training will be provided during the project Works Management The development of the business processes that enable the delivery of an asset management program

The Maintenance Iceberg A holistic approach to Asset Management excellence should be pursued rather than a narrow pursuit of maintenance cost reduction.
