Chemistry Starter LEQ: How can I separate mixtures? Starter: Part I: Pick up your milk lab from yesterday. Check your updated graded as of 9/29/2010. This grade does not include the milk lab. Part II: In your chemistry notebook, write the following prompt and write your response. PROMPT: If there are 26 people in the class and 4 of them are wear red shirts, 15 are wearing black shirts and 7 are wearing green shirts. What is the percentage of people wearing red shirts?

Application of starter to chemistry I measure 25 grams of a sand and salt mixture. I separate the sand and salt by dissolving the salt and filtering the sand from the salt water. I allow the sand to dry and the sand weights 14 grams. What is the percent of sand (or percent composition of sand) in my mixture?

How can I separate mixtures? You can use anything in your lab drawer. Additional materials: Filter paper Drying oven Mesh screen Magnets Water Task today: Devise a rough draft of your lab procedures on a sheet of lined paper. Do not complete the experiment.

Find your partner by matching the number or letter Find your partner by matching the number or letter. Both partners see me with both cards and I’ll hand you your sample to examine. Get goggles and begin devising a set of procedures at your lab station. Cross off the name on the index card and write your names at the station number. Do not begin separating the mixture, only devise a set of procedures.

Ideal Procedures Weight total sample. Separate pebbles and iron filling and weight each separately. Left with sand and salt. Dissolve salt with water. Filter sand from the salt water. Let sand dry (hot plate)and weight it. Calculate mass of sugar by subtraction or … Evaporate water from the salt water mixture. (You may want to measure the mass of beaker you put the salt water solution in first because the salt will crust to the beaker.)

Chemistry Starter: Take your chem notebook and calculator to your lab station and have one partner pick up the procedures form Mrs. Fringer. Do not begin the lab. I need to talk with you all.
