Introduction Content of Australian Curriculum: Languages to be used as a basis for the development of a NSW Languages K-10 Framework Australian Curriculum 13 language specific syllabuses to be developed based on the framework K-10 framework to be published Term 3 2016 K-10 draft framework BOSTES online survey

Some important things about this document…. What is a framework? A template to base the development of all (scripted and non scripted) language specific syllabuses This is what we currently have in NSW This is different to AC Some important things about this document…. multiple entry points along K-8 continuum two options content will be based on AC syllabus and content is task based

Some guiding questions…. Is the framework approach appropriate? Is there an alternative approach? Does it accommodate needs of all students? Is it clear what students are expected to achieve? Could you use this document? What do you like about our current K-10 syllabuses?

Introduction to the Framework (p6-9) Possible questions for discussion: Is the framework approach appropriate? Does this framework cater for differences between languages? Is this the best approach in order to cater for learning needs of all students? Should there be a statement about mandatory hours? 10 min discussion

Does it provide a statement of the overall purpose of the syllabus? AIM (p10) Is the aim appropriate? Does it provide a statement of the overall purpose of the syllabus? Does it contain everything? 5 minutes discussion

Where does the objective Values and attitudes fit in? Objectives (p10) Do the 3 objectives define the knowledge, skills, understanding and values and attitudes to be developed through the study of Languages? 2 objectives in content: Communicating and Understanding (similar to AC) Where does the objective Values and attitudes fit in? 5 minutes

Course structure and Options (PP11-17) 2 options Include Early Stage outcomes K-6 outcomes same in both options Option 1 K-10 1 document Multiple entry points Differentiated content Stages 4 and 5 - generic to accommodate range of students

Course structure and Options (PP11-17) Option 2 2 pathways (A and B) Pathway A – K-10 continuous study Pathway B – 7-10 start in Yr 7 2 documents Stage 4 of Pathway A is same as Stage 5 of Option 1 Similar to AC structure

Course structure and Options (PP11-17) What is your preferred option? Which option would provide you with the most guidance? Is there another structure? How does each option best meet our diversity of learners? 10 minutes

Are the outcomes clear statements of an end point? Could you use these outcomes to measure and report achievement? Is there sufficient difference to indicate progression through the Stages? Is the terminology clear? 15 minutes

Organisation of Content (PP18-25) Task-based Is the description of the difference between an exercise, activity and task clear?(p18) Is the layout and organisation of the content clear and does it contain all necessary elements? Is it clear what students learn in language? Do you have suggestions for terminology? 10 minutes

Yrs 7-10 Life Skills (PP26-28) Do the 7-10 Life Skills outcomes provide sufficient scope for developing programs for students with special education needs? Do the 7-10 Life Skills outcomes provide a sound basis for guiding assessment and reporting of student achievement? What additional information (if any) would be helpful for you when planning and programming for a student with special education needs? 10 minutes

Please add any other comments. Most important…. Do you think this framework forms a sound basis for the development of language specific syllabuses? Please add any other comments. 10 minutes
