Think it over Reading Trains that fly Today, the fastest way to get from one city to another in most countries is to fly. But the trains of the future will change the way we travel. In west germany and japan, a new kind of train that floats aon air is being tested. These trains are called ‘magnetically levitated trains’, or simply, MAGLEVS. They move on a magneticcushion of air. On a recent test in japan’s kyushu island, a magnetic train reached a speed of320 miles per hour. The japan national railway hopes that by 1990, trains like this can repleace the shinkansen , the ‘bullet’ trains that travel between tokyo and osaka at 130 miles per hour. In emsland, in north- western germany, a 196- passenger maglev train will soon be tested at speeds of 250 miles per hour. German engineers hope that in the future, a maglev trains system will link the cities of western europe. Plan are alredy being prepared to test maglevs in the united states. They could bocome an important part of the united states transportation system. Many american cities are a few hundred miles apart. A flight by air between cities like these only takes an hour, but getting to the airport often takes longer than the flight it self. Airplnes are also less efficient that trains. They use a lot of their fuel just getting into the air. Trains have another advantage over airplanes, they take their passenger directly to the centreof cities.
