Pushpa Bhat US CMS Collaboration Board Meeting About me .. In a nutshell .. Scientist II, Particle Physics Division Joined Fermilab in 1989 as a postdoc; worked in Physics Department, Computing and Accelerator Divisions and now in PPD; also NIU Previous affiliations: Duke, Eindhoven, Bangalore Univ. Experimental Physics from keV – TeV energies Current experiments: CMS, DØ. Previous: E-597, E-743, E-537 Made significant contributions to the discovery of the top quark, precision measurement of its mass and to new particle searches (DØ) My work on the applications of multivariate methods in data analyses initiated a paradigm-shift in physics analyses at the Tevatron Led the Fermilab Run II Luminosity Upgrades project during the critical years of 2003-06, first as Deputy Project Manager, then as Project Manager Pushpa Bhat US CMS Collaboration Board Meeting
Pushpa Bhat US CMS Collaboration Board Meeting Leadership and Project Management The Fermilab Run II Tevatron Luminosity & Reliability Upgrades (2003-06) An ambitious mission-critical project (~$50M) to deliver up to 8 fb-1 to CDF and DØ by 2009. (now accomplished and exceeded, and looking forward to more luminosity!) saw the project through from ~0% to ~90% completion interacted with lots of experts in the AD and lab-wide (and outside the lab) , DOE, various review committees and lab management. A project that was a spectacular success and a project that I enjoyed immensely (in spite of many challenges)! Also an Adjunct Professor and graduate faculty at NIU; mentored several dozens of students at all academic levels; recipient of NSF grants, reviewer of DOE, NSF grant proposals. Named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science: “for visionary leadership in new particle searches and a key role in the Tevatron upgrades program” Elected to the Chair-line of the American Physical Society’s Forum on Physics & Society; currently serving as Vice-Chair. Why should you vote for me? My diverse experience can help strengthen US CMS leadership I am passionate about the success of US CMS and its implications for US HEP. I have relocated to CERN for a year. I will be able to better represent you and advocate on behalf of US CMS here. I am sure most of us would like to hear that we will get more funding or that we can reduce the number of CMS meetings. But, those are given, we always attempt to get the best deals. But, here is what I plan to do, in addition to the formal duties – Try to make sure opportunities of engagement are fairly and broadly distributed. This gets more people engaged and benefits everyone. Review and advocate changes to the existing systems and structures if they can be made more effective or propose new ideas. I will survey the collaboration to hear your concerns and get inputs. Find ways to better deploy the resources we have, to fully realize our potential. I will happily supplement interactions/negotiations with CMS management, US CMS program management and funding agencies, as needed, and will be a strong advocate for our causes. The future of the field Support for HEP in the US. Continuity and a level of clarity for young people in the field! Doing a so-so job is not an option! We should do our best! CMS detector is a magnificent scientific instrument and US CMS collaboration is a strong and major player in the global CMS endeavor We need to make sure we sustain a strong, effective, friendly and supportive collaboration with an engaged membership!
