Higher Biology Mutations part 3

Mutations By the end of this lesson you should be able to: Understand more about the role of mutations in the evolution of a new species. Know what a gene mutation is. Be able to name and describe the 4 mutations that can alter the structure of one gene. Be able to name mutagenic agents

Gene mutations A gene mutation involves a change in the number or sequence of bases within a single gene.

Gene mutations deletion inversion insertion substitution There are 4 types: deletion inversion insertion substitution

Gene mutations Read Torrance pages 114-116 Make brief notes on each kind of gene mutation. Explain why insertion and deletion of bases will have the greatest effects. Insert and complete the “Gene Mutation” diagram from your pack into your notes.

Gene mutations Describe what a mutagenic agent is. Give 4 examples of mutagenic agents.

Mutations Can you do it? Understand more about the role of mutations in the evolution of a new species. Know what a gene mutation is. Be able to name and describe the 4 mutations that can alter the structure of one gene. Be able to name mutagenic agents
