25 Cities will be operational by 2017 Status Update - Implementation 25 Cities will be operational by 2017 Census-Based Statistical Areas Brown = Qualifying CBSA’s – i.e. CBSA’s that include a city with a population over 200,000 Green = in states that didn’t have a Qualifying CBSA with one of their cities, these are the CBSA’s that contain the largest city (or next largest that hasn’t already been taken/swallowed by another state’s city-CBSA, as in the cases of NJ, CT, and DE). The final city choice will be after consultation with the state forester. Goal: each state has one city with a red zone that gets measured with 200 plots. NOTE: the green CBSA’s are shown for the NRS region only Census-Based Statistical Areas

Agreement Reminders Reminder to draw down funding on a regular basis. Money that’s older than FY 2017 or 2016, may be subject to fire borrowing Our plan this year is to pre-pay our three big data collection partners, ME, MN, and IN with FY 2017 funds to pay for FY 2018 field work. Our other partner, SD is funded for current year work. Working to get wood utilization in as many partnered agreements as possible. State/local employees best logistical choice to do these.

Less Paper More Digital FIA Scanning current paper plot sheets Allegro PDR replacement

Next Generation PDR Goal – Going Paperless No Hardcopy Plot Sheets No Hardcopy Images All in One Machine With GPS Ability to Draw

Digital Plot Sheets All FY 2016 and 2017 plots will have current plot sheets scanned and loaded to MIDAS with the plot data files. Next remeasurement will have digital files available for use on the next generation tablet PDRs

Plans to replace our aging PDR inventory over the next 3 years. PDR Replacements Plans to replace our aging PDR inventory over the next 3 years. Allegro 2 is our current best option for data entry. Exploring tablets for solely displaying imagery and plot sheets and generating new digital plot and SP maps. Tablet could replace employee’s PC to make tablet with Allegro a cost effective alternative. Tablet requirement is a minimum 10” screen for display of imagery and plotsheets. We plan to begin replacements of approximately 1/3 of our Allegro inventory over the next three years. Two options: Dell Latitude 12 rugged and the Allegro 2

Current field testing is concentrated on: Tablets Current field testing is concentrated on: Displaying imagery and sketch maps Real time GPS on imagery Drawing capabilities for plot and SP maps Exploring drawing software options Battery performance in cold weather and battery life Explore non-ruggedized tablet options

Panasonic CF 20 10” Screen Laptop/Tablet This is a tablet and laptop combo Field testing results: Screen size displays plot sheets and imagery well Sketching/drawing takes at least twice as long as on paper Entering text to maps is tedious and slow Drawing limitations may be related to drawing software and not the unit Cost is about $3,700 Weight 3.9 lbs

Allegro 2 Pros: Cons: Key pad with opposing thumbs entry Lightweight – 2 lbs. Ergonomic design – GPS navigation Price - $2,300 Cons: Small screen – limited imagery display, no digital drawing capability

Advantages of inReach Explorer vs. SPOT Two-way communication, even without cell phone reception Two-way communication with Search and Rescue personnel if SOS is sent Battery life is noted on the screen AND a warning message is sent when battery life is below 25% Rechargeable battery Navigation tools that can be used in the field or the office including route planning, tracking, and setting waypoints Easy for office personnel to find nearest assistance to field crew
