Grade 5 Barge Trip

Grade 5 Barge Trip Chao Phraya River in Thailand. We investigate the river environment and human impact upon it. 27th – 30th January 2014. Jon and Melinda

Traidhos Three-Generation Barge Program Educating for Sustainability in the Chao Phraya Watershed since 1995

Traidhos Three-Generation Barge Program In 1995, The Traidhos Three-Generation Barge Program started working on the Chao Phraya River as an environmental education program. In 2001, the Barge Program was named one of five best practices in the Asia Pacific, by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program). The program has become well-known among Thai Schools, International Schools, and organizations from many different countries. In 2008 IGES recognized the program as one of good practice in the field of education for sustainability. All staff have degrees from international or Thai universities, and are CPR and First Aid certified. Jon

Staff Each trip will have at least two ISPP teachers, one male and one female. There will be three Barge staff and crew. The Barge staff will include a native Thai speaker. Jon

The Barge Originally a Rice Barge used on the Chao Phraya, the boat has been converted to a floating classroom. The boat is registered with the Thai Harbor Department and the captain is licensed there as well. Jon

Barge Teaching Methodology Our goal is to present activities in a sequence that… introduces students to global environmental issues, requires them to apply critical thinking skills to environmental issues in their immediate environment, encourages them to take responsibility through independent action. Environmental Action Explore issue Analyze activity Consider options Take action

Trip Objectives Students will: Explore the region’s history by visiting historical sites and conducting investigations; Experience life in Thailand first hand; Investigate the natural river environment of the Chao Phraya watershed and the human impact upon it; Have fun living and working together.

Working in a Team and as a Community Co-operation Challenge Communication Consideration

Safety Risk Assessment at each site (safety rules, play boundaries) Staff are practiced in First Aid, CPR and water life-saving techniques. All sites have full evacuation plans. The barge is equipped with first-aid supplies and staff carry first-aid bags whenever leaving the ship. Jon’s last slide
