Our Journey Together Week 10

Philippians 2:5 “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:” NIV

Review Part Eight: Refocusing The

REFOCUS Your MIND IN THE GAP You move towards what you are focused on

REFOCUS Your MIND IN THE GAP Your thought life is the track the train of your life runs on

REFOCUS Your MIND IN THE GAP If my thoughts are negative I am going to behave negative, choose the negative and reap the negative.

REFOCUS Your MIND IN THE GAP If my thoughts are based in faith (which is always positive) I am going to behave positive, choose the positive and reap the positive.

Philippians 2:5 “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:” NIV

`Philippians 4:8 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate (think) on these things. (NKJV)

Tool 1 – Logic ~ “Think” The word for (meditate) “think” used here in the original Greek is logivzesqe (logidsesthe) from which we get our English word “LOGIC”.

Tool 1 – Logic ~ “Think” THINK – Use Logic (logivzesqe) Control yourself through LOGIC and NOT EMOTION REDIRECT to healthy logical thinking instead of reacting with and being controlled by your emotions

Tool 2 – Whatever’s TRUE Meaning – True, truthful, worthy of credit The real stuff ~Not emotional distortions Focus thoughts away from illusions of anxiety and onto the truth Stand on the unchangeable truth of the Bible.

Tool 3 - Whatever’s NOBLE Nobel – The awe inspiring things that cause you to worship God.

Tool 3 - Whatever’s NOBLE Look for the noble in people, places and things, instead of looking for the ignoble. Look for what brings praise to God instead of what prompts criticism of people.

Tool 4 – Whatever’s Just or Right Just –Do what is biblically “Just” or the right thing in the eyes of God. You are called to do the right thing even when your emotions want you to do something else.

Tool 4 – Whatever’s Just or Right True godly justice ALWAYS does the right thing according to God’s Law and ALWAYS does it with merciful caring love.

Tool 5 – Whatever’s Pure Pure – Greek  hagna Meaning – to be pure or holy, a sign of the presence of the HOLY Spirit. Pure to the core or pure from the inside out because your thought life controls your lifestyle.

I Corinthians 6:18-20 18 Flee from sexual immorality I Corinthians 6:18-20 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Start new and finish well Tool 5 – Whatever’s Pure Start new and finish well

Tool 6 – Whatever’s Lovely Lovely – Greek word  prosphile. Meaning – Lit. “Towards friendly”. Lovely in sense of loving “Think about” being friendly. Think about things that build relationships.

Tool 6 – Whatever’s Lovely We need to be “lovely” here at church especially. Pros-phile towards friendship with each other. Especially welcoming new people. 2017 Our Purpose Driven Easter plans.

Tool 6 – Whatever’s Lovely Your part… Invite those who don’t regularly attend church to come. Focus on welcoming new people

Tool 7 – of Good Report Whatever things of Good Report Good report - Greek word  euphema – eu- “well or good”, phema “saying or speech”, literally to bring to light The Greek word behind our English word “Euphemism”- To substitute nice words instead of harsh or offensive ones Go past thinking to speaking good Eph 4:29

Tool 7 – of Good Report Think about the good things people say. Think in ways that promote your speaking positively Original meaning – “use words to good omen” Don’t quench the Spirit in the way you talk. Ephesians 4:29.

Tool 7 – of Good Report A Good Report on another Person… Your thoughts… will control your relationship destiny through your words, attitudes and actions. Homework… make a list of the good things about your spouse.

Tool 8 – Virtue If there is any “virtue” - Goodness and excellence Greek word  arête, related to “aristos” which means “the best” from which we get our word aristocracy. We need to look at people as if they are all the best.

Tool 8 – Virtue Meaning – Good quality of any kind. Any excellence in a person The positive perspective. Look only for the good. Being positive instead of negative. Something good you can think about someone to change your perspective and feelings about them.

Tool 9 – Praiseworthy If there be anything Praiseworthy. Meaning – Something you can talk positive about. Go beyond thinking into speaking positive. Note ~ internalize by thought (virtue) and verbalize (Praiseworthy).

Tool 9 – Praiseworthy God wants you to transform your positive thoughts into positive action words that you habitually use to change your character and ultimately your destiny

Tool 9 – Praiseworthy Thinking and speaking good thoughts creates flow throughout your brain that influence your perception, emotion and action.

Tool 9 – Praiseworthy Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

The Whole Tool Box Philippians 4:9 “Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me--everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
