Artificial Turf Installation WILDCAT MIDDLE FIELD Project Design & Scope Artificial Turf Installation June 12, 2014

Design Process The Gateway Engineers was assigned by the Mt. Lebanon Commission to design and bid of an artificial turf surface at Wildcat & Middle fields. We have teamed with JT Sauer, a experienced field designer that we already were working with on other artificial turf projects.

Design Process JT Sauer and Gateway have been meeting with the Commission appointed Turf Task Force since January on a potential layout and design elements of the field. We have met with turf vendors to review the project and confirm the budget for construction.

Design Process Completed preliminary work to obtain and existing conditions plan and evaluate the underlying condition of the soils located on the site. Conducted a resident meeting to review the project. Checked in with the Commission on various occasions to provide updates.

Design Process Completed design plans and specification for bidding. Held a pre-bid meeting with contractors on June 6, 2014. Expect bids on June 19, 2014. Expect construction to begin August 1, 2014

Final Field Layout

Engineering Considerations Floodplain – Not in a designated floodplain by FEMA. Historically flooding occurs in Dixon Field but not Wildcat or Middle Fields.

Stormwater Management Engineering Considerations Stormwater Management The 2.7 acre artificial turf project comprises 0.7% of the 350 acre watershed that flows through Cedar Boulevard. Heavily used natural turf does not percolate more than a 10th of an inch per hour. Thus it already has a fairly high rate of runoff.

Engineering Considerations No stormwater management currently exists on the site. As proposed, the proposed artificial turf project will have a stormwater management system will: Decrease the rate of flow for all storms up to the 100 year storm. Decrease the rate of flow for the 25 year storm by 12%.

Engineering Considerations This is accomplished by slowing the water down through a series of pipes and storing water in the field base and in trenches under the field comprised of approximately 68,000 gallons, which will gradually be released by a control mechanism.

Engineering Considerations

Engineering Considerations Think of the field as a bathtub storing water and the control mechanism being the drain in the tub. When the tub is filled, the water gradually drains.

Engineering Considerations

Engineering Considerations In accordance with DEP water quality requirements because infiltration cannot occur with any value, pollutant reduction is required: A Grass field according to DEP of 2.7 acres creates 279 lbs. of total suspended solids, 1.5 lbs. of Total Phosphorous and 1.41 lbs. of Total Nitrates yearly. Construction of the new artificial turf will remove this pollutant load.

Engineering Considerations In addition, Best Management Practices or BMP’s will be employed. The proposed BMP’s that will act in series are: The stone base for the field. The sump in the manhole of the outlet control mechanism.

Engineering Considerations The stone base of the field will filter the water as it percolates through it. The sump in the manhole will help collect suspended solids and improve pollutant removal efficiency. The use of artificial turf will eliminate any fertilizers being used on the existing grass field.
