Enhancement Expectations Read the following e-mail that will be sent to your faculty mentor, and keep in mind these 3 points: The expectations for the work to be completed The poster session information The timing of the addition of “Honors” to your transcript Please note: You are NOT able to enhance ENGL 400 or GNED 400. You must take an Honors Section.

Faculty E-mail/Student Expectations Good afternoon, Dr. Longwood, Mary Beth Smith, a student in your Advanced Potions class, has submitted to the Honors College a form to declare an intention to enhance your course.  An enhancement, which is referred to as a “contract course” at many institutions, is a means by which an Honors student can take an upper-level course to meet both major and Honors requirements.  Though enhancements may be used for other purposes in certain circumstances, the intent is to allow students to do advanced Honors work in major courses that are unlikely to have enough Honors students in a given semester to warrant an Honors section. As a follow-up to Mary’s submission, I would like to outline some expectations for the work in an enhanced course.  Given the tremendous variability in student majors, these are necessarily broad.   The student will have a serious discussion with the faculty member to determine the appropriateness of an enhancement and the faculty member’s ability to add it to his/her workload.  We anticipate that successful completion will require regular contact between you and Mary outside of class.  Please understand that there is no expectation that you will agree to oversee an enhancement, and we know that it may not be a good fit in this course and/or this semester. The student and faculty member together will determine an appropriate project or other effort for the enhancement.  We like to say that this will be “different work, not more work,” but the truth is that different work is usually also more work.  This project should be substantial, mature, scholarly work.  Again, this will differ from one course to the next, but please think about an effort and time investment on par with that required for a 15-20 page research paper. Each student is required to share her/his knowledge, skills, and experiences with an appropriate audience.  That may be your class, but we have an expectation that it will include the Cormier Honors College Poster Session (Wednesday 26 April, late afternoon; more details to follow). Students were required to submit an “intent to enhance” form to the Honors College. Each student is then contacted by me to 1) explore the appropriateness of the proposed plan or 2) direct him/her to the next step in the process, which is talking to you. The scope and timeline for the project are for you and Mary to determine.  Once you two have outlined the Honors effort in your class, Mary will submit a formal enhancement contract form to the Honors College. Mary will be contacted by the Honors College staff later in the semester to coordinate printing of the poster, and I will be in touch with you during exam week to determine if Mary has met your and our expectations for Honors credit.  If Mary has, then the Honors designation will be added to the course listing on the academic transcript after grades have been submitted. Thank you, Dr. Longwood, for considering this opportunity to work with one of our Honors students.  Enhancements provide important and very individualized growth opportunities for students, and they are only possible due to the investment of time and energy by faculty.  I appreciate that you almost certainly do not have time for this, and that makes this all the more valued by me and by Mary.  Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with questions.  I will be happy to assist.
