Tourist attractions of Great Britain

London Eye This is a giant Ferris wheel on the River Thames in London. It was desgined by David Marks & Julia Barfield and another architects. During the year, it has been visiting by 3,5 milion tourists. It was built between 1998-1999. Distinguishing features: Height - 135 meters Diameter of wheel – 120 meters Cost - £70 million Weight – 600 tones It has 32 ovoidal capsules

Edinburgh Castle This is a historic fortress. It dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh. Castle was occupied since at least Iron Age. Buildings of present castle date from the 12th to 21st centuries. Today, the building is using as a tourist attraction. The oldest building in the castle is St. Margaret’s Chapel. One O’Clock Gun is a time signal fired every day at precisely 13:00 excepting Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Stonehenge This is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire. Stonehenge was built between 3100 BC and 1600 BC. It was produced by a culture that left no written records. A number of myths surround the stones. Stonehenge could have been a burgial ground from its earliest beginnings. Stonehenge was added to UNESCO’s list. That’s regarged as a British cultural icon.

Palace of Westminster This is the meeting place of the House of Commons and Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the UK. Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames. It is at a UNESCO’s list. Most of people associate Westminster Palace with Elizabeth Tower, commonly known as Big Ben Palace was built in 1016, than demolished in 1834 and than rebuilt in 1840-1870. The owner of this building is Queen Elizabeth II in right of the Crown.

Platform 9 ¾ Piccadilly Circus Piccaadilly Circus is London’s measly attempt at Time’s Square. It’s always ridiculously busy with bright billboards lining the edges of the buildings. This is one for all the Harry Potter fans out there! If you want to find Platform 9 3/4 they have it all set up, permanently, at King’s Cross Station. 

Baker Street Rolling Bridge This is famous London’s street. People associate it through two literary figures: Sherlock Holmes and dr. John H. Watson. This is modern, movable bridge in London. Bridge roll itself every Friday at 12:00. It cost £500,000.

Britain’s Smallest Police Station Aldwych tube station Britain’s Smallest Police Station This tiny box could accomodate up to two prisoners at time, athough its main purpose was to hold a single officer as a CCTV camera. Today the box is no longer used by the Police. It is used as a broom cupboard. Aldwych is a closed station on the London Underground, located in Central London. Disused parts od the station were used during both world wars as a shelter. It has been closed in 90’ years.
