Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood The Ark as a Type for Salvation

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood Postponement of the flood Methuselah (969) – “when he is dead it will come” 1 Peter 3:20 – Noah took 120 years to build the Ark!

1 Peter 3:20 (ESV) 20  because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood Postponement of the flood Methuselah (969) – “when he is dead it will come” 1 Peter 3:20 – Noah took 120 years to build the Ark! Nature’s testimony – Romans 1:19-20

Romans 1:19-20 (ESV) 19  For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20  For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood Postponement of the flood Methuselah (969) – “when he is dead it will come” 1 Peter 3:20 – Noah took 120 years to build the Ark! Nature’s testimony – Romans 1:19-20 Our conscience – Romans 2:14-15

Romans 2:14-15 (ESV) 14  For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15  They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood Postponement of the flood Methuselah (969) – “when he is dead it will come” 1 Peter 3:20 – Noah took 120 years to build the Ark! Nature’s testimony – Romans 1:19-20 Our conscience – Romans 2:14-15 Eternity in our hearts – Ecclesiastes 3:11

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood The provocation of the flood The promise of a redeemer –Genesis 49:18

Genesis 49:18 (ESV) 18 I wait for your salvation, O Lord.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Flood The provocation of the flood The promise of a redeemer –Genesis 49:18 Institution of sacrifices The “mark” set upon Cain The institution of the Sabbath From Adam to Methuselah Enoch’s and Noah’s preaching The ministry of the Holy Spirit People fell not from ignorance but willfully.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation The ark was a divine provision – Genesis 6:13-14; Revelation 13:8. God revealed to Noah His design for a way of escape from divine judgment. Noah did not invent the ark! God revealed salvation by His Spirit to Noah! He does the same for us – 2 Corinthians 4:6.

2 Corinthians 4:6 (ESV) 6  For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation The material of the ark (gopher wood) is important. Life comes out of death. Life is only secured by sacrifice – cross of wood. The ark was a refuge from Divine judgment – a shelter and place of safety. Noah’s ark – wrath of God Moses’ ark – Satan’s destruction Ark of the Covenant – condemnation of Law

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation God invited man into the ark. First time the word “come” is used. Not “go” (depart) but “come” (toward), intimating God’s presence. The ark was a place of absolute security. Pitched “within and without” – Colossians 3:1-3

Colossians 3:1-3 (ESV) 1  If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2  Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3  For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation God invited man into the ark. First time the word “come” is used. Not “go” (depart) but “come” (toward), intimating God’s presence. The ark was a place of absolute security. Pitched “within and without” – Colossians 3:1-3 The Lord “shut him in” – 1 Peter 1:5

1 Peter 1:5 (ESV) 5  who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation God invited man into the ark. First time the word “come” is used. Not “go” (depart) but “come” (toward), intimating God’s presence. The ark was a place of absolute security. Pitched “within and without” – Colossians 3:1-3 The Lord “shut him in” – 1 Peter 1:5 All who entered the ark left the ark safely.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation The ark had only one door! There were three stories on the ark corresponding to our threefold salvation. Saved from the penalty of sin – Justification Saved from the power of sin – Sanctification Saved from the presence of sin – Glorification

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation The ark had a window that was above the inhabitants. The ark was fashioned with “rooms” or “nests.” The ark was more than a refuge. The ark was a resting place.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation The ark speaks of atonement. Does not use the word for pitch – zetteth Instead, uses the word for covering – kapher The storm “fell” on the ark, but God’s wrath was only below the atoning blood – in the flood. Our redeemer suffered instead – Psalm 42:7.

Psalm 42:7 (ESV) 7 Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.

Jesus and Lessons From the Ark Genesis 7 The Ark as a Type for Salvation The ark teaches of the resurrection as well as the atonement. The ark rests on Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The Lord commands the seventh month to become the first month at the institution of the Passover on the fourteenth day of the seventh month (now the first month). Jesus raises from the dead three days later (the seventeenth day of the month).
